Basically my neighbor's trampoline broke last summer.  He heard I got a welder, and was wondering what it could do.  Mine is the Clarke 130EN, does up to 3/16 .  I have it setup for flux cored, and dont plan on converting soon.  Just wondering if anyone knows what trampoline frames are made of?  Is it just plain steel tubing?  Will I be able to just get it to weld nice with flux core?  Looks arent the problem.  Weak weld from the factory.Let me know all input, thanks.-PatI'm 21 and learningAvid 4wd enthusiastASE Master tech (Automotive), mechanic/fabricator by trade
Reply:I repaired some tubes from a trampoline frame about 2 years ago.At best they were 16ga (.063")I'm sure that you're welder will be up to handling the task.- Paulhttp://all-a-cart.comWelding Cart Kits and accessories
Reply:Sure you can do it.  If you could get a sleeve it would be easier and stronger.  DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:I TIG welded a trampoline frame recently.  A thunderstorm came through and blew it itto a tree.  My friend said it "folded like a taco shell."   Anyway, it was galvanized steel tubing (0.038).  The manufacturer had punched small rectangular holes in the tubing to attach the springs.  The holes are the weak point, and the frame broke in two places.  I chose to re-inforce from the inside by sliding pieces of pipe inside the tubing, then TIG welding around the outside.  Sleeving would work just as well.
Reply:Your welder should be fine for this, but consider the following before trying:RUN AWAY. DON'T do it. If there is ever an injury or failure, even if it has nothing to do with what you did, you will have a target painted on your back the size of a semi-trailer. A commercial shop has liability insurance for this type of work (or passes on it if their insurance won't cover the job)Some things really shouldn't be touched, even if you can do the job just fine.

Reply:Update:Did the trampoline. First break was in 3 parts!  To my surprise, I did an excellent job on it.  Everything went together great.  When they were reassembling, they found a DIFFERENT piece that they tried to fix themselves last year with brazing.  Didnt work so great.I took that piece, and it was so weak I just kicked it once and it fell of.I rewelded, and now the trampoline is working great.  Thanks for the help guys!I'm 21 and learningAvid 4wd enthusiastASE Master tech (Automotive), mechanic/fabricator by trade

Reply:I tell neighbors bluntly, "this is your one freebie, then I have materials to pay for when welding". My buddy, that owns the small engine place, and I charge each other. In the long run it works out better. This week I needed a new gas tank for my Craftsman. It's a plastic tank, sealed with heated plastic....woohooo. I set up his PC with a wireless card for $42, he ordered my tank and got it shipped her e for $38. I told him to keep the difference. Then he jokingly said, "ya after what you charged me for the last welding job, you're a few dollars up on me".John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:Originally Posted by gnm109I absolutely agree. You neighbor needs to purchase a NEW trampoline. Also, you are conditioning your neighbor to the fact that you will do freebies for him, forever and ever amen. You will look out your back door and find lawnmower crankcases, weedeater shafts, bed frames, seats, swings, car manifolds, and wheels left for your tender attention.  I foolishly helped my neighbor with some welding once and thereafter I was the neighborhood welder for him at his disposal. When I asked him to pay for the welding gas, he got mad and wouldn't bring me any more free work for, heck, it was nearly two days. After 25 years he moved away and said not a word about all of the free stuff I did for him. And for what? Take our advice and run away, not only for the liability issue but also for the free work that's coming that you will be doing in your spare time. RUN , RUN, RUN!!!!!!!!!

Reply:Only make the repair with that welder if their kid's and the trampoline bother you....but make 'em sign a release from liability first!Hobart 140 Handler w/ gasHyperTherm Powermax 380 Plasmaoxy/acetylene
