I see that a lot of the long time stick weldors here prefer 7018 as a general use rod,but I seldom hear much about 7014 rod, which I really like. Is there any particular reason for the preference for 7018,other than the cracking prevention of a low hydrogen rod?I really like the drag rod aspect of 7014,particularly as a fairly newbie weldor. For me it's easier to lay a smooth bead with it than with the often recommended starter rod: 6013. It seems to have penetration just as deep as 6013, and as a fast fill rod it's more forgiving of wide gaps. I run an 180A max AC-only welder,so I'm pretty much limited to 7018-AC rather than regular 7018. I also don't have a rod oven, which is the main reason I've never run any type of 7018 in the past. Should I give it a try,or stick with what I'm used to?
Reply:Well, I primarily use 7018 because that's what is needed for the majority of my repair work. For general fabrication, I will use the 7014, 6013, even a 7024 on some jobs. In my opinion the 7014 is a little tougher rod to run out of position. To me it seems to want to drip more so than the 6013 or 7018. I have been told that was due to the iron powder in the flux, but not sure. In my opinion, practice with every rod type you can get your hands on. It will benefit you in the long run.... ~JacksonI'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man...... |
