I have a dragster 80 by Thermal Arc.  I use it for doing installation of railing, fencing, and even steel steps .  I was looking to upgrade to a Miller 150 or other 100 amp inverter.  Looking at product literature they each require greater than 20 amps inorder to achieve 100 amps.  I really like the Dragster for what I use it for, however a little more amperage would be nice.  I use household current on many installations so 20 amps is the most I can count on.From my research 85 amps is the max output 20 amps input will provide.  Is this correct?  Any suggestions on a welder to fit my needs?  Is there a noticeable difference between 80 amps and 85 amps?   My welder is an 80 amp welder.
Reply:Ever consider going to a mig?  The Millermatic 140 sounds like it would suit your needs. If you want to stick with Stick, the Miller Maxstar 150 S is fairly versital:Input Power115 VAC 1- Phase 230 VAC 1- Phase Rated Output115 VAC 70 A at 22.8 VDC, 100% Duty Cycle 115 VAC 100A at 24 VDC, 35% Duty Cycle 230 VAC 100 A at 24 VDC, 100% Duty Cycle 230 VAC 150 A at 26 VDC, 30% Duty CycleI know I am a newbie here but have been learning and welding for the past 6 months.  I also have done a TON of research about what welders to buy.    I am very pleased with my miller, this is why I have recomended them.Last edited by rustywrangler; 05-25-2007 at 09:52 PM.
Reply:I weld stick day in and day out.    I would think a mig would not be well suited for his needs.  Especially considering the portability and even more so if this work is outside.   I looked into this a while back for a friend who is part time in the railing and fence business.  He wound up going with the lincoln V-100.  I think it draws 23 or 24 amps at full amperage.  I know it was just a touch over 20.  I can tell you this, I ran the little machine once, and at max amps with a 7018 It did not trip a 20 amp breaker.  He does always use a 10ga extension cord with it to help.  Now I'm not saying it won't trip a 20A breaker,  but the one I ran didn't so take that for what it's worth. ~JacksonI'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:I have a Sears 100 amp stick welder. It runs on 120v and won't trip a 20 amp breaker. I don't know if they make them anymore, though.
Reply:Why are you only limited to 20 amp? Make up an adapter cord so you can plug into a dryer or stove receptacle. Brings you up to 30 and 40 amps at either 120 or 208 volts depending how you set it up.
Reply:Thanks guysI did he mig/wire feeder thing for years.  Then, somebody sold me the TA80 for $100.  It weighs 7lbs.  After carrying a 7lbs welder around I will never consider a 110v mig portable.I don't hear much about the 100-V by lincoln.  That might be the most viable option especially since I can get full power from my generator.WolfmanOnly in the field am limited to 110v/20 amps, because I use household current whenever possible.   Um... now that you mention it, I could run a Miller 150s off my generator at 220v.  I already have the adaptor.  I'd have max power on max input amps at 110v or 220v off the generator but no worse off when using household current.good idea

Reply:Originally Posted by MAC702You should also include that this proposed solution violates the National Electric Code, and should only be done by someone who completely understands why and how to still make sure they do this safely. And unless he has a wye-connected 3-phase service, he's likely to have 240V, not 208V.

Reply:Thanks againSo, when does a 20 amp circuit breaker trip--When you go just over 20 amps or is there some percent above 20 amps?  Does over duty cycle cause it to trip?I looked at the invertec 100 by lincoln.  I said, you need a 20 amp breaker for full power but it pulled 23 amps at full power.  Is 3-4 amps above rating significant difference in circuir breaker?
Reply:I'm sure you don't want my opinion, but I still think you are overlooking some facts, realisticly any modern inverter from a named company is going to be better than the TA 80 you have, if you don't want Miller for whatever reason, look into a:Lincoln (seemed power hungry to me, rated at 32A)Esab has a 100A SMAW machine (rated 26A)ArcOne claims their 100A machine only requires a 20A circuit (no rating, I suspect ~24A) plus it has a duty cycle of 35%, which is 3.5x the TA80D's. I can't and won't vouch from the quality of ArcOne machines, I'm just trying to be helpful.

Reply:LOL , too true. Dont worry, I never took it that way. Too thick skinned . Good idea to make it clear though that it needs a little technical know how to do it safely. I forget sometimes that we're not all electricians when i give out an idea.
