ok, what EXACTLY is pulse, is it faster, slower, more productive. when was is it first intrduced into the welding world? does it give more or less penetration? yes I did a search for pulse and even though there was alot of information about it none of it answered my questions. The guys at work call it training wheels but I find it faster and it makes more uniform welds. Oh yeah it is on coldroll mild steel. I am in great desire of some help, so I thank you for help in advance.
Reply:I asked the same question about a month or two ago.    I was told to search. It is a great way to run open roots and to weld real thin material.  If you turn the pulse to a very high frequency it can actually weld hotter than without pulse.  Or so i've read.  I believe it can give less or the same penetration depending on the frequency and what you set your amperage to.I also found that you aren't allowed to use it when taking weld tests.  There must be a reason.  Probably because it has been tested to be not as strong.  On light guage materials, tubing, stuff like that I am sure it would be fine for strength.
Reply:Could you be more specific.   Coldroll mild steel ....are you saying thats what you want it for?It does provide a somewhat of a split second cooling action of the puddle therefore a tad bit better puddle control;however, you can produce this buy your technique aswell.   I once turned down an older Dial-Arc from Miller awhile back because it did not have pulse technology.....  I regret not buying it when I had the chance.I believe I would have been just fine. But seriously if you want to buy one w/ pulse do it;however,if a price is good on an older model don't let this "magical" pulsing action discourage you.You know there is such thing as pulse for mig too... weld it like you own it

Reply:Originally Posted by RojodiabloThe reason you don't get to use it in a test is the test is to judge your puddle/ welder control, not the machines' ability. They already know the machine can weld....
Reply:Originally Posted by WelderBoyWell that's bullsh*t then.  The machine CAN'T weld.  It produces power.  If that is the case then the weld test may as well require us to build our own welder from scratch then have a bike hooked to a generator as we generate our own power, with no squarewave, no high frequency, no arc control, no pre/post flow, right?  Those are all "features" that help you put a quality weld on the metal.  You shouldn't be limited in a test like that.

Reply:The way I understand it, you can have a weld that gets full penetration when its on hi current with  LESS TOTAL heat input.  So it does work and help on thinnner guage stuff.  And yes I started out using the pulse to make my stack of dimes, then I figured out how to tig properly and do not use pulse to make my welds look good, but I do use it for thin stuff or getting way into a deep Vee or corner.Where is pulser?  DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
