Ok, I was out today working on some pipe and was expecting a good job. Then I noticed something not right. When I would begin to weld, the welder seemed to surge. It didn't maintain a consitent sound or weld. The surge was kind of like a car idling and then you would rev it up and let off and it would come back down. It would try to show me a puddle and the suge would hit and wipe it out and the process started back again. Can anyone give an idea thsi would be. Thanks youWhitey
Reply:First off what brand and model machine is it?  At first thought I would say that the idle mechanism is acting up.....   A few more specifics might help narrow it down. ~JacksonI'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:the machine is a 100 fluxcore welder. Runs off of 110 household power. Has a high range and a low range as far as dialing them up or down.
Reply:Well you got me I was thinking of a engine driven.  Do you have a good ground?  also has the material been cleaned in the weld area?  I have never seen that in a wire feed machine.  is it the wire feed surging or the current?I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:By coincidence I had a similar problem yesterday with my little MIG so I took the gear reduction mechanism apart and greased the gears and shafts inside and put a drop of oil on the motor bearings.  It fixed the problem. To diagnose, remove the wire, pull the trigger and watch the drive roll turn (a flashlight helps).  Test it as you turn the wire speed knob up and down.  At any particular setting, from slowest to fastest, it should turn nice and steady at a constant speed.Favorite right now is a Miller Syncro 200.Tons of tools and I blame at least one of them when things don't go right.
Reply:Sounds like it could be a dirty liner or the spool is binding in the machine.  If your wire slows down or speeds up, it will drive you nuts changing the heat.  Remove, clean and inspect your liner, put in a new contact tip and re set the drive roll pressure according to the directions.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:ok I think I may have fixed it. 1. The extension cord was to long, so I plugged up the unit straight to the socket itself. Tried again and no real progress. I then changed out the contact tip and BANG!!! This welder took off like it is suppose to do. Super Power for a 110. I guess I need to get another extension cord that is smaller, and buy some more of those contact tipsl Thank You.Brian White
