I'm fairly new to welding and I am working on building a utility trailer, it was going not to bad until I attemped to weld vertically.  I am trying to weld the inside corner of two pieces of 3" x 4" x 1/4" angle and due to the size of the trailer it's not practical to flip it on its end.  So when I tried to weld it, I either got dripping bubbly metal or burn through.  I am wondering should I be trying to push or drag the weld up or down.  Also what kind of heat / speed setting should I start with ( I'm using a Millermatic 180 with argon/oxy gas).  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Reply:In a 1/4" fillet, with a clean groove, you should be able to weave your way up.  Start on one side of the joint about 2 or 3 wire widths out from the root.  Pull the trigger, now move to the other side of the joint same distance.  Pause, move to the center just above, point the wire right in the root.  Pause, move to the right, pause, left pause, center pause.........  Like a Christmas tree, or triangle weave.  Use a little less heat than you would flat.  The wire should be perpendicular to the groove or a few degrees up.  You can also weld side to side pausing only at the sides.  If you move slowly across the middle or pause in the middle, it will sag.Got a camera? We love picsDavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Argon/Oxygen is a hot gas for spray welding, you might want to go to Argon/CO2 (75/25)  JohnSMAW,GMAW,FCAW,GTAW,SAW,PAC/PAW/OFCand Shielding Gases.  There all here. :
Reply:John, I have a bottle of Argon/02, I will try it tomorrow with short arc.  Never done it.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

Reply:my mistake, the gas is argon / CO2, 75/25 mix, I'll try weave/pause and see how I make out, also I'll take some pics of my first attempt later and post them, but I must warn you there some hard to look at
Reply:It took me a long time to learn vertical up. Once yo get it you got it.  No matter what process.Good luckDavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

Reply:Isn't 17V a little hot for only 125amp...and then you say oxy makes it even hotter ? 3/8 - 1/4 stickout is fairly normal with small solid wire wouldn't you say.Anything worth doing is worth doing RIGHT
Reply:olddad, I was giving a standard short arc v/a that I would use with 75/25, yes I think that will be a bit hot, but oxygen is not for shortcircuiting welding and 3/8-1/4 is normal for short arc.   Lets see what he can do with different settings,  just somewhere to start.    JohnSMAW,GMAW,FCAW,GTAW,SAW,PAC/PAW/OFCand Shielding Gases.  There all here. :
