Like I've  heard about welding under water and I told my dad I was interested in it and he laughed and said right..So after getting dissed by teh daddy I started looking at different types of specialty welding. I was interested in Where they climb high and weld on beams and stuff: Can anyone tell me about this?*insert welding gibberish here*                    Mandy
Reply:Underwater welding means you have to be a diver and a welder.Ironworker welding beams and such means you are up high and welding. So, what's the question?

Reply:ls1ta, an apprentice does recieve less pay than the journeymen do. but the last union job i did, those fellas were getting 82.35% of journeymen pay for the first 1000 hours. so for 5 months they were getting $22.23 an hour. not bad money for a 18-21 yo. plus there is benefits to boot."Retreat hell, were just fighting in the other direction"Miller Trailblazer 302, Extreme 12 VS, Dimension 400, Spectrum 375, HF 251D-1, Milermatic 251 w/ spoolgun  Hypertherm 1000Lincoln sp 1702000 F-450 to haul it
Reply:There is big money in underwater welding, since it is tough work and dangerous.  Many jobs are related to the offshore oil drilling platforms and ship maintenance, with some jobs "out there" for weeks at a time, then "on shore" for a few weeks. There are schools that will take you from ground zero and train you.  Talk to them, go visit them, and talk to some experienced underwater welders. The Navy has a program, too.  When you are informed, then time to set some goals! http://www.trade-schools.net/directo...-directory.asp

Reply:Yep underwater welding pays the most. Why, because it is very dangerous. I only know two of those guys and both were cripples by the time they hit 30. If you can fab pipe you can do anything (huge difference from weld pipe there) because the principals are all the same. In construction I worked with the millwrights 300 feet up, next job I did structural with the ironworkers (I really enjoyed it but I was on a good crew), the next job I was in the fab shop on site doing pipe and structural. A 6g pipe test qualifies you for both, not so with a 6g structural test. If you go with one thing only you aren't going to be very marketable. I am proficient with sticks, tig and mig though I do not tig pipe (lost too much range of motion in my wrist due to injury). Where I really make the money is with the mig. Lower cost, faster completion, but there are some things the mig isn't well suited for and that's where the sticks come in. In all of the places I have worked no process paid any better than the others did. Your best bet with tig is learning to do pipe, but even the demand for that is going to drop. Lincoln has developed a new mig process called surface tension transfer, and though I haven't had the chance to see it, nor have I been able to find a lot of info on it, what I have seen points to it replacing the tig on pipe. The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist.

Reply:With underwater welding, it's the constant changes and addition of atmospheric pressure that takes its toll on all of your body.  That's why you are limited to x number of dive hours.
Reply:If you want some serious answers on the underwater   welding PM me and we will talk.  Give you lots of info on the ph. weld it like you own it
Reply:check into the the expected pay for underwater welding. a will most likely be just above minimum wage. you'll get that for a couple of years. i would never advise anyone to follow this job path. to much danger for so little pay. you will not get that much useful welding experience as an underwater welder. just tending lines at first. if you only want to do it for a short time or because you think it is cool, i would advise aginst it. just my opinion
Reply:Here's a good article on the WIDE range of underwater jobs out there, and the places it can take you, wow.  Don't forget about the associated jobs, too, if you don't want to go "whole hog" on the diving part.   http://www.underwater.com/archives/arch/026.01.shtml

Reply:I have worked with several diver/welders. The pay they received was based on in water time and it was only equivalent to my pay as a dry land foreman of a construction millwright crew. When not in the water they were paid a scale similar to a labor job. This may not be the norm but these divers were from a large longtime dive/salvage/repair company. I think there is a big misconception about the scale for underwater welding. I didn't see the attraction for me to be under water with a hundred or more amps in my hand for the same pay I was getting on dry land. Also, there was much talk about some of the older divers that could not function properly unless they were under water. And I use the term "older" as it pertains to divers and not general age. Unless you have a serious drive to become a diver/welder I would suggest you take some of the advice here and look into a good apprenticeship program in the field of your choice. Before the flack flies, I realize there are divers out there that make much more than others, but I don't think you can count on landing one of these jobs as a freshman.SA200,Ranger8,Trailblazer251NT,MM250,Dayton225AC,T  D-XL75,SpoolMate3545SGA100C,HF-15-1  RFCS-14 When I stick it, it stays stuck!
