Seeing that no one could reply to my question ( Good Welder vs Bad Welder) I would like to ask another question. Has anyone out there had not so good results when using a Miller Maxstar 150 welder. I see that there has been a run of hardly used  Maxstar 150  STL and STH welders up for sale on Ebay. Theres got to be some good reason that people are selling them just days or weeks after buying them. I would like to hear your opinion on this welder whether good or bad. Thanks.
Reply:Well, the run on ebay could be several things. From the input from the guys here that have them they sound like a solid machine so I'll discount the possibility of their being junk unlil we start getting reports stating that. That leaves two other common possibilities, one being gift buying. Lot of times we wind up with less than we want or need when such a purchase has been acquired as a gift. The most common though is inexperience, a guy that just doesn't have enough of it to make the correct selection for his needs. With the opinions of board members that have them they are a good enough machine that I would consider one. You can't beat the convienence, they'll plug into any normal household current. They weigh next to nothing and take up very little space. They appear to be ready to weld out of the box...hook up your gas and go. They lack power but are plenty for schedule 40 & 80 pipe. General fab work should also be within their realm. They seem like a good machine for the buck, less than $1300 plus a bottle of gas.Anything worth doing is worth doing RIGHT
Reply:I love my 150 stl. I think folks buy one and decide they want to do aluminium and upgrade to an ac capable machine.Victor SuperRanger O/A                                         Solar migLincoln Powermig 140Southbend 9in lathe350# kohlswa anvilMiller Maxstar 150 stl etc....

Reply:I have ran mine for a year and literaly have welded for 8 hours strait and it just spluged right along. I would recomend one and a 100% duty cycle at 100 amps and only 14 pounds. If you want to do aluminum pass it up its dc only. Dont wast your money on the sth get the stl. Lift arc works great and does not shock the snot out of you. Steel Thunder Welding LLC. Reply:I've had an STL for about 6 months now, and it has done everything I need it to. Right now, my welds are the limiting factor in what I can get out of it. It is also a very good stick machine. Off of 110V, it will burn 3/32 or smaller rods all day. TIG with it on mild steel is as good as or better than the Lincoln (not sure of model) or the Miller (again, can't remember offhand) the the campus machine shop has.Lift Arc and hot start are very helpful. As others have said, it won't do aluminum.
