This is a business proposition for anybody in the Dallas area who wants to learn how to do auto paint work in exchange for welding/ light fabrication lessons. I'm a painter at a small body shop in the north Dallas area and I'm looking for some new skills. I use PPG paint products everyday and have experience in show car, collision, production work, colorsand and buff, stripes, light graphics, everything except extreme graphics, airbrushing, and pinstriping. I'm not an old school painter and have no experience with lacquer, nitrocellulose, etc. I have been painting for about a year and yes I'm 22, if that's a problem I'm sorry, I don't know everything, but I can get it done and I learned from an old school painter. I would like to learn how to weld and do some fabrication work, so I can make things that I have ideas for. Here's some pictures of my work, I didn't do everything on each car, there was a team involved and I don't take all the credit, but I can show you how to do all of it (paintwise, minor bodywork).
Reply:That grey mustang is beautiful. Zap will start drooling as soon as he sees it. I would like to help, but I am in Ca. Good luck though, we have a lot of very good welders here, and they are really helpful. I am sure one of the locals will invite you down. PaulAnd then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.
Reply:Not exactly "drooling" but pretty close.. I'd teach you to tig for free when I have my next class...but I'm in Mass..Oh well.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Nobody wants to learn how to paint? There's got to be some welders in Dallas/ Fort Worth. Or is it nobody wants to teach future competition?

Reply:Oh, I'm sorry I forgot. Please don't mistake my confidence for cockiness or a bad attitude. I would really like to learn how to weld, thank you.
Reply:Hang in there. You'll get a bite soon. There are gobs of weldors in Texas...It's my understanding that 4 out of 3 people in Texas are weldors, based on the number of Texans on weldingweb...as soon as you learn, that ratio will be even larger.Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.
Reply:Do you work for yearone? That 69 camaro was built by them and designed by chip foose.
Reply:Originator, I'll tell you what the prospects could be thinking: Anybody who has seen what goes into a terrific paint job, -such as you posted- knows that it involves an incredible amount of labor and prep work. Once one pays for the labor of proper preparation, and the materials; it makes little sense to experiment with paint. Isn't it five grand and up, for a mid-range pro paint job? So the cost to have it sprayed by VanGogh, in his heated down-draft booth, is a relatively minor extra. It may be difficult to find a weldor looking to learn a second career. However you probably could find a weldor/fabricator who has a half finished dream that he would like finished with some nice body/paint work. If you two can build a rapport, he may be willing to help you with some of his valuable shop time and expertise, in trade for your premium body/paint work.

Reply:Isn't it five grand and up, for a mid-range pro paint job? That's the average price of a decent paint job, close to factory orange peel minor imperfections. The Challenger in the pictures I posted would cost around $25,000 with the graphics, pinstripes, and complete colorsand and buff (doorjambs, under the decklid, inside the engine bay, about 80 hours just for colorsand and buff). That car sold last January at the Barrett-Jackson for $346,500. People pay stupid money for things to boost their ego.
Reply:I would like to learn to weld AND paint. I love buying great running cars with poor bodies and fixing up the bodies.Love welding? http://industrial-tools-equipment.com
Reply:Craigslist.com has a section for folks wanting to barter skills, also help wanted.I suggest you volenteer free help for equal training time on a welder.(It might also be a good place to find a used welder.)
