sp 125 plus and aluminum

I have a lincoln sp 125 plus and i have been told it can weld aluminum if i change the gas to argon 100% and use a telfon liner in the gun. Has any one ever done this before??? I am just wanting to weld some aluminum sheets together for my buggy, dirt shields...

Reply:I havn't tried it yet but I have the same unit at work. They purchased the Aluminum wire kit for it that Lincoln sell. It is for running aluminum wire on that welder. The unit is a pretty decent welder but not sure how it will work. I will post what I find when I give it a go.Miller DVI2Lincoln Precision Tig 225Thermodynamics Cutmaster 38Everything else needed.
Reply:FYI I use a regular push gun on aluminum. I am taking a lunch break and going out to weld more of it. A teflon liner is a must. Use 5356 wire 4043 is to soft trust me I have a roll in mine right now. The cable must be kept as strait as posible and dont twist it. I have used the better part of a 18" roll of wire on this one job using push only on a 15' gun. My welder is a Miller Matic 350P I run pulse for aluminum and it is great. I run 3/64" wire with a .062 tip. This is a little bigger than recomended but It helps keep the wire from sticking in the tip. This is not an ideal set up but it does work. Be patient you bill have bird nest issues but it is managable. I had one in 3.5 hrs. this morning. As for the voltage amprage issue I dont know. Welding in puse is not the same so I do not know if the voltage = spray applies to pulse. Try it and see. All you really need is gas and a liner. If it works it will be the best aluminum weld you have even seen. Steel Thunder Welding LLC.
