Hey all. I got offered a job at a construction site doing a power plant.I have never done this type of job before.I have mostly worked in shops and a train yard.I was told they were supplying all the equipment,But I am guessing I will need to bring a few tools also. Can anyone let me know what personal tools I will need to take and give me an idea on what I'm looking at doing?I just want to get a good understanding on what skills I am going to need to hone before I get there.I was told the test was a D1.1 7018 all the way out so I know I will need to practice that.Do they usually supply harnesses and such? Thanks in advance,DDOGIf it's too . get an office jobLincoln wp225g7 Lincoln 250 idealarcFrankenstein O/A set-up Weld-tech tig set-upLincoln sp 175 plus profax arc gouger
Reply:I've done a few power plants and this is what I know you will need: a good chipping hammer (the ones they supply are usually junk), a small ball peen hammer for stenciling, a 3 or 4 pound hammer, most of the rest they should supply. My experience has been that they supply all safety equipment (sometimes even the hood), but you will need a hood that attaches to a hardhat. I usually had a lot of other stuff on hand, but I normally worked details or fabrication. Who is the contractor and what type work will you be in? What you need can differ from pipe to structural but the stuff I listed is a must have. The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist.
Reply:The job will be structual I know that.I got the call from Tradesman International.I have to call them back to get some more details. If it's too . get an office jobLincoln wp225g7 Lincoln 250 idealarcFrankenstein O/A set-up Weld-tech tig set-upLincoln sp 175 plus profax arc gouger
Reply:as far as the test goes on site like this do you need to know what material it is?cut and bevel your own plates?tell them what preheat and have your own tempstix?I don't have a AWS code book (yet) so I am curious to what testing will be like and if it is typically 3/8" or 1" or (both) in the 3 & 4G positions. If it's too . get an office jobLincoln wp225g7 Lincoln 250 idealarcFrankenstein O/A set-up Weld-tech tig set-upLincoln sp 175 plus profax arc gouger
Reply:Hard to say, but my experience as far as plant structural goes and pipe for that matter they already had the coupons with machined bevels, just clean them up and go. I've never done a test on mild steel that required preheating. All of the structural tests I have taken were done on 3/8ths. I took one in MS that used backing strips. I had never heard of such a thing as everything is open root in the oilfield, but the test administrator (after he quit laughing) was more than happy to tell me what they wanted. The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship.
