I have 2 - 24"X24"X1/2" plates.  I plan on using them to build a welding table.  My question is should I join the 2 pieces or should or should I leave a gap between the 2 pieces to allow for clamping in the middle of the table?  Thanks in advance for your imput.Oley
Reply:I would build a angle iron frame to set them into.use countersunk machine screws to attach them. i would keep the plates seperate, but butted up next to each other.
Reply:You could make the angles over length.  Mount one plate and use two sets of mounting holes for the second plate.  One set of holes keeps the plated together and the second would leave you clamping gap.  Make up a drop in tray to fill the open end when your plates are butted together.  Best of both worlds.DennisThermal Arc 185-TSWMillermatic Challenger 172VictorO/AAtlas Craftsman 12 by 24 LatheEsab PCM-875Wholesalem Tool Mill-Drill
Reply:drill straight, round holes in the tops, then drill and cut slots in the angle. that way, you can slide the tops and create a slot when you need it, and smash them together when you need a solid top. if you don'd wanna do the slots, but still want the functionality, you can also drill a series of holes in the angle. as long as they line up fine, then you can just choose what hole you want to clamp to and you'll be set. there is also a way to do it without drilling or cutting any slots, and still getting unlimited variation in your gap size. lemme know if you want it and i can draw it up for you.Later,Andy
