A good deal of you know me on this board as I have been a long time posting member here, and I'm sure some of the newer members don't since I have spent a few months off of the forums due to working out of town.   After coming back, and reading to catch up on things I have missed.  I see a whole new attitude on the forum that I did not see previously.  I have recognized some new names on the board, and some seem very knowledgeable, but for some reason it seems that everyone (especially the newer guys) care more about starting a pi$$ing contest than offering help like it used to be?  I have read a dozen threads the past few days that absolutely no one benefited from because posters either had to insult someone, give inaccurate info, or basically just stir up problems.  This is something I don't remember seeing much of in the past.  I hate to see the attitudes on this forum start down hill considering the positive effect it has had in the past.  This has always been a place that anyone could come to ask for and receive GREAT information on welding.  Seems now you can't ask a question without someone turning the thread upside down.  I'm sure some will even flame me for this post but I felt it needed to be said.  I just hate to see a forum, with as many knowledgeable members as weldingweb has, be turned into a circus.  ~JacksonLast edited by Hammack_Welding; 02-27-2008 at 01:52 AM.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:I Know what you mean Hammack. The site has changed some but I am hoping it will revert back to it's good old ways soon. Since thier is no such thing as a stupid question I don't know where the problem lies.I will say I am glad to see you back.Miller DVI2Lincoln Precision Tig 225Thermodynamics Cutmaster 38Everything else needed.
Reply:I think things are starting to get back to a more normal tone lately. There was a lot of trouble makers for a while. Things got outta hand but seems like its getting back to more help and less ego's and people looking for a fight. I am glad you are back. You do great work and since I use to be a diesel mechanic I enjoy the big stuff you work on. "Every choice you make will effect at least one other person"
Reply:I am mainly a lurker and have been for over 3 years.  I have been on internet forums since early 2000 and have watched a few of my favorites grow into basically online pissing matches and incessant stupid, useless posts.  On all the sites that I am on( sorry kids, but its the truth) its a bunch of 'gimme gimme gimme' teens who have been enabled by their parents to get whatever they want and not have to work for it.  There are still a few sites that I am on that do not put up with crap like that and ban them immediately.  Granted, they are few and far between, but they are still there.  Recently, on this site, I have seen alot of questions asking 'whats the biggest money making venture with welding?'  It's nice to have kids coming into the welding industry, but they are in it for the wrong reasons.  -Greg

Reply:Welcome back. Have you been to the Miller Boards lately. It is really bad there. I answered a post about pics of alum welding and the person posting was requesting tips. I told him to clean more. Others posted and stated cleaning is really not necessary cause the cleaning action of the machine does that. I was like OK you know it all and never re-responded in the posts.  T.J.Last edited by TJS; 02-27-2008 at 10:32 AM.www.tjsperformance.comDynasty 300 DXHTP 240HTP Microcut 380Hyperthem 85JD2 Hyd Bender and HF Hyd Ring Roller all in one =(Frankenbender)Bpt. Reply:To start, once again Welcome Back...you have been missed !!As for the situation being what it is now, you remember how the crap was starting up about the time you hit the road. It got a lot worse. We've just never fully recovered from that dismal spell we went thru a few months ago. Anyway, I think I'm still basically the same stubborn opinionated feller I was then. I don't read everything like I used to and still have my very dry speaking (typing) habits. I don't participate on a regular basis anymore either, that might be a good thing...lol, too many thin skinned among the active users to suit me nowadays. Welderwoman went away about the same time as you, she was (IMO) a great resource on any of the flux wires and general production welding. I also enjoyed reading pinklilly's exploits, it was interesting to follow what she was going through. A new state, new business, going thru the process of setting up her business network and all the involved hassles with that plus raising a family (all in real time posts). She probably has her hands full now if her husband shipped out to the war however.I don't know if whatever happened could be fixed but it's most definately obvious that we went astray somehow. To me a lot of it seems to be the lack of input from some of the folks we had already made opinions of. I seem to be in a learning mode...figuring out among these new ones who really knows their stuff and who is preaching from google and books on their desk.Sorry, guess my rambling doesn't help answer your questions.Anything worth doing is worth doing RIGHT
Reply:i am pretty new here , so i don't know how it used to be here.  there are a few kids on here that i don't read any of their post, nor do i try and help them because of their attitude, hoping maybe they will go away.  i, like most of us, am here to learn welding again, and help where i can.  i am always up for a good debate, but there is a fine line between debating and pissing.  only we can change the forum.  i just don't respond to short time trouble makers.   my .00001 cent worth.
Reply:Hammack, my boy... how's it been? yea... thing shave gotten rough around here lately. it seems like things are starting to calm back down again, but who knows what the future may hold? Micro got his own forum up and running now and it's building slowly, but surely, and seems to be a little more welding-oriented and a bit more laid back when it comes to general discussion as well as welding info. other than the random BS that has arisen and the random BS that has passed, nothing much has changed. it seems like a lot of guys are kind of laying low for a while and not doing much, mainly because too many stupid people hijack the threads and all hell breaks loose eventually. anyway, good to have you back.Later,Andy

Reply:Iv'e only been on here a few months but the atmosphere of a lot of the posting has dropped quite a bit lately. I have seen a lot of helpful information and also a lot of basically hot air posted on here. If I offer a tip or procedure it is because I have used it a long time and know it works. If it is something I haven't tried I won't post it. If a fuss starts up I just stay out of it.

Reply:Well, I didn't start this post to point fingers, I was just curious if others were seeing the same things I was picking up on.  Olddad, you've always been a grouchy old fart, but We put up with ya anyway. haha  I'm always up for a debate or exchange of differeing methods/opinions.  It just seemed from my reading that things were getting a bit more personal than I remembering them being in the past.  Well, I don't really have anymore to add, but for the record it's good to be back. ~JacksonI'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......

Reply:Personally, all the guys I grew up around that worked in the steel mills, especially the welders, were nasty looking, nasty smelling grouches that I kept my distance from.  Not a PC one of them in the bunch.  It was like they had a stinger shoved up their butt 24\7.  You didn't cross them or look crossways at them. The F-word was a regular part of the vocabulary, used in every form possible, sometimes redundantly, if you get my drift. So, given that reputation, I'm surprised that this place is as civil as it is.  Just like pro hockey players throwing their gloves at the drop of a hat has become infrequent, some folks think every other facet of life must also become kinder and more gentle.  That's not gonna happen to many who make a living under a hood.  A harsh or rough exterior is just part of being in this trade; a badge of honor.  Polite society be damned.  Of course, your mileage may vary.  And management reserves the right to toss anyone they wish.

Reply:First.  I have already said it WELCOME BACK JACKSON!  I have done some of the same type of work you do now.  I would like to get back to that stuff instead of being a mechanic.  Right now its 50/50  Welding/mechanic work.Next.  I am glad you asked the question.  I see a lot of responses. We will do what we can to make the site better.  I would like to hear from everybody that posted so far what the #1 thing we (I?) could do to help clean up the crap.  Things did get pretty rough here for a while and some were banned.  Its getting better but takes time.  I personally can't read every thread any more.   There are just too many posts in a day.I have said it before.  If you see something, send me a PM.  DavidLast edited by David R; 02-27-2008 at 05:07 PM.Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:In follow-up to David, we do care what you folks think. This is your site and we want to maintain it as you see fit. We walk a tightrope every day, though, because at some point, curtailing the incivility becomes a subjective task. And it becomes a larger job than this crew can handle. We did just suspend one member for 10 days for launching off on another member with a personal attack that was over the top and unnecessary. And we're prepared to do more of that.At the same time, we depend on your feedback. Please don't hesitate to report posts that are in the wrong spirit. Again, our evaluation will be subjective to some extent, and you may not always agree with the action taken. But if you let us know where you have objections, it makes us more sensitive about where to draw the lines and when action is necessary.I'm glad you're all here and hope you'll continue to use the site. We'll do our best to help maintain the civility this community seems to desire. Perhaps we've erred too much on the side of  NOT acting over the past couple months. We can make an adjustment. Reply:You know what though, from Hammack's description it seems like he left right around when I joined up.Just being here since then I have noticed a change in the intended effect of the posts around here. I get pissed off just like anyone and am certainly guilty of a few smart-assed responses myself. But lately its about "winning" arguements and pounding peoples heads into the sand when we dont agree with what they say or think they are nuts.Sure some of the stuff people say on here is left field and sometimes just wrong. But when someone new shows up and sees countless posts back and forth in a negative tone this place looks like any other bridge on the information "super highway" with a bunch of trolls under it.Whatever
Reply:great post! for the record , for all to read , i am by no means an expert on anything but slipping curb, so i keep my posts/replies to a minimum so as not to look like an idiot. i really enjoy reading all the posts , pictures , and all the chicanery. although, some of you guys should all get together, line up , whip  'em out ,see whos is bigger and finally put it to bedso that the rest of us can get back to LEARNING from you instead of reading the childish back and forth but in all seriousness, this is hands down, far and away, the best site of its kind on the web. and everyone who posts makes it that way. and, i have to admit , i do get a kick out of seeing certain members cut down once in a while.
Reply:Jackson, I'm relatively new here, and this is the only forum that I participate in, so I can't compare to much. I just figured that the B.S. came with the territory.(internet)  From what I gather I've only been here during the ill mannered times, and I've still learned quite a bit, and hopefully was able to help some less experienced folks. I have noticed that it is real easy to be mis-interpreted if you don't word things carefully. Lots of problems could be avoided if people would just stop and think for a moment about how what they type will be "heard". A thicker skin wouldn't hurt some either. By that I mean the ability to accept criticism without having an out-of-body. If you post something that is wrong and get called on it, admit it! We can't all be right all of the time. Personally, I've learned alot more by screwing up than by being right. Sometimes  there is more than one way to skin a cat. Are you going to keep the hide for a mount, or are you just gonna fry up the meat and make cat on a stick? Hopefully the cooler heads prevail and this continues to be a great place to learn.
