TIG root and hot pass vs. Stick

I am new to pipe welding and was wondering what kind of work requires a tig root, or even tig all the way out, and what requires stick all the way out. What application is each used for.
Reply:What ever the procedure calls for.  There are many combinations of the two.   JohnSMAW,GMAW,FCAW,GTAW,SAW,PAC/PAW/OFCand Shielding Gases.  There all here. :
