What reference books would you suggest for your "welding library"?
Reply:what process and application are they to be used for
Reply:Stick, MIG and TIG.
Reply:Based upon recommendations that I've read on this board, I purchased the following:New Lessons In Arc WeldingThe Procedure Handbook Of Arc Welding... and a few others from that Lincoln site. They just arrived a few days ago, so I've only started reading the first book. Both are very comprehensive, and an absolute bargain. I'll bet Lincoln is basically giving these away at cost.
Reply:Welding Procedures from the Lincoln web site. Best twenty five dollars you will ever spend for a reference book. They also have some other publications that they provide at a resonable price. If you want to spend some more money  you can get Modern Welding by Bowditch. This is what they use at our local Tech School. It goes for over a hundred dollars I think. The book by Lincoln would be the first one I would buy though.
Reply:I have quite a few books on the subject and "The Procedure Handbook of Arc Welding" is always the first one I grab. The books are published by the James F. Lincoln Arc Welding Foundation. He actually founded the company and later turned it over to his brother so that he could concentrate on scientific research. They in fact do sell them for little over cost. The foundations motto is: "Shared knowledge is the foundation of all progress". I tend to shy away from college texts, and yes I bought my share of them, because it is a racket (even had several professors who used no required texts for that very reason). All of the information in them is available from other sources.Last edited by Jolly Roger; 02-22-2008 at 07:07 PM.Reason: changed wordingThe difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. Reply:Can anyone suggest a cheap way to get these in Australia? The Australia site just takes me straight to the US book shop that wants to use UPS for shipping which will add $50 to the cost. USPS should be $20 or so, but UPS in the past have wanted everything to go through customs which adds a lot to the cost.

Reply:Welding Principles and Applications; by Larry Jeffus. I have the fifth edition. It is published by {Thomson * Delmar Learning} and is very comprehensive and over 900 pages. There are a whole series by William H. Minnick for individual processes. Yeah, I just bought the Lincoln Handbook on tuesday, good reading! Get a load of that welding truck from the twenties!!City of L.A. Structural; Manual & Semi-Automatic;"Surely there is a mine for silver, and a place where gold is refined. Iron is taken from the earth, and copper is smelted from ore."Job 28:1,2Lincoln, Miller, Victor & ISV BibleDanny

Reply:Brett, thanks, I'll chase that up on Thursday when I'm at TAFE. The "TIG for dummies" course I'm on might have given me an unreasonably harsh view of the course materials available.

Reply:Just as an after thought Moz,Surely they are starting you out with "Measuring and Thermal cutting" which is the first module of all of them ?It gives a brief intro to Soldering, Oxy, Stick, Mig, Tig and IMPORTANTLY OH&S? No manuals or books in your course?A good guess is better than a bad measurement
Reply:I'm doing "introduction to GTAW" and the 20 photocopied page "text" is a joke. There's an OHS component that consisted of 20 minutes of the tutor going "fumes are bad" and "electricity is bad" with no real detail, and was followed by him demonstrating that you don't really need ear protection to use a linisher. But that stuff bothers me less than his "yeah, that's great" response to seeing my welds. They are not great, they are rough and spotty and I am really hoping for some instruction in how to make them better. Basic safety stuff I can do for myself (having an auto-dark helmet makes life much easier there) but welding instruction! I want welding instruction! But this is the dummies course, so I'm hoping that after 5 weeks of this we will go up a level and get a better instructor and more useful information. This is the one:http://www.sit.nsw.edu.au/courses/se...a_Index_ID=513
Reply:Best of luck and remember very often the store man has forgotten more than you and I will ever know , this is true at St George ("Cranky" Bob)A good guess is better than a bad measurement
Reply:Thanks
Reply:a used technical bookstore is a good resource for getting a deal on the above books
Reply:Processes and Power Sourcesolder but the best! might be difficult to find even if you are in the states.

Reply:Well then, guess I'll scratch Lincoln from the list of places I'll buy learning materials from.   I won't deal with any American firm that won't send to Canada via USPS.   Brokerage fees kill us up here in Canada, eh!  Originally Posted by ManglerI had the same problem because I'm in Canada. Since Lincoln only ships UPS, there's nothing you can do but bite the bullet. I hate UPS.. bunch of thieving SOB's. Unfortunately, our American neighbors loving using UPS, so Fedex, Purolator etc., are rarely an option.
Reply:Dellwas, you are certainly entitled to feel that way. I want to point out that you are missing out on some of the best knowledge you can find about welding by not having the Lincoln literature though.
