galvanizing hot dip VS galvanizing spray...

I was wondering if anybody in the forum have tried or owned a galvanzing facilities? Is hot dip and spray technique differ? which method is the best...Unit in my fab shop dept:my good hand and team that trust me...A lone welder make art... a village full of welder make Miracles...
Reply:I suppose "best" might depend on what you are planning to get galvanized and what its application would be?  Same as with everything else in life.Dipping would be limited to the size of the tank, whereas electrogalvanizing would just need a room big enough, which is easier to do for large things, but then again there are some really big dipping tanks out there, too; but you cleverly don't tell us where you are.There is a dipping facility here, but the tank is small.  I've had some grates galvanized there, but I learned the hard way that I have to make sure they get it hot enough first, or the stuff will freeze to my steel before bonding very well.  They seem to do a better job if I stand there and watch them.Electrogalvanizing will give a good bond, have a more uniform appearance, and be a thinner coat, like what you find on EMT conduit in the US.

Reply:nop... I am new to the business of fab shop... pressing the learning curve... sleep 6 hours daily with work and learning in internet as a must... I dont compare myself with the expert in the forum but would like to humbly learn the right and safe way of doing things... we can learn alot from ZAP... site leader...Unit in my fab shop dept:my good hand and team that trust me...A lone welder make art... a village full of welder make Miracles...
Reply:Molten (hot) spray is supposed to be pretty good as far as protection goes. It can go on pretty thick and there aren't many size restrictions. Not that I know anything but in my mind it can't be as good as hot dip what with the alloying that happens with hot dip.I'm thinking the advantage would be something contructing entire tower sections all welded up, then have them hot sprayed and hauled to a site. Less bolting up.

Reply:I know some agricultural irrigation Companies will hot dip 40' spans of 6" and 8" pipe.  I will tell ya that is without a doubt the roughest stuff to try and work with you have ever seen.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......

Reply:I forgot I was supposed to read every fluff thread and memorize all the personal details.Guess I'm not as good as the Almighty Zap.  Just been here longer, and gotten tired of guessing.Anyway, looks like you are getting good info.Here, we buy two kinds of steel.  Galvanized or rusty.  Needless to say, we build a lot of stuff out of galvanized, which is also why I do so much Stick welding lately!  Slag is your friend...
Reply:A good hot dip galvanize will last up to 100 years.  The success of the coating is dependent on good preparation by the fabricator.  There is or was an excellent site put up by the american galvanizing association.  For some reason I cannot access it.  Metal spray systems are difficult to do if the piece is complicated and do not coat the interior surfaces.
