Guys i have been getting into some shipping container repair for a shipping firm. Never fells, when they call and needs something fixed, wind blowing like a mother and its always raining or snowing. Any way i usally will grab a suit case, but here latly the wind is a factor and the paint is starting to be a factor. Also the thickness is 18 ga and smaller. I usally have to fill in holes. I would like to find a rod that i can arc with. I tried using a 3\32 7018 and just hated it. To hot couldn't fill with that. I was thinking of a 1\16 6011 rod or 6013 rod. The rod is going to have to be all position.  Just wondering what some of you guys think. I would like to just drive up and fix and go. Not have to worry about grinding paint or rust.  I just might be asking too much.

Reply:I have welded a ton of 18ga with a 1/16" or 5/64" 6013.  I keep them on the truck for field repairs on sheet metal.  O/A will work as well.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:Is the wind still a factor with a self-shielded flux-core wire in the SuitCase?  I would be trying that first.  And if you were doing a lot of deposition, it would be so much faster and cheaper. But if Stick was my only option, then I'd definitely be looking for those 1/16" 6013s.
Reply:.045 NR211 MP.It will be fast and easy.  Runs all the way down to 14 volts.I once welded a tailpipe on a bobcat with 1/16" NR 211.David
Reply:i have never heard of .045 NR211 MP. What is that?? I use a lot of UTP product and i have a 1\16 rod that is call utp 612, but at 6.70 a lb that is a little high of rod to use i think. That is why i was wondering about 6013. I have never really tried a flux core wire,, just because i never really had too. Most of the time, if i can't wire it do to the wind, i grab a rod and go to town, but never on this thin of stuff. O2 axy is out of the question. To much time.  What is the biggest difference between 6011 and 6013. I know chemical back ground between them, but how do they weld. I know that 6011 is farmer rod. Can blow through anything, and deep penitration. Thanks guys, some day i will have to upload some pictures of my two rigs. Hammack_Welding never got to thank you for the chance of buying your bobcat. I bought a trailblazer for one hell of a deal.
Reply:6011 is a fast freeze rod with no iron powder so it fills very little. 6013 is fill freeze rod with some iron powder in the flux. It will run out of position but not as easy as 6011. Pentitration will be better with 6011 but 6013 will look nicer due to the slower puddle freezing.
Reply:It sounds like you are doing this all day. Lincoln NR211 is an ET71-1 wire, Self shielded, all position, multipass wire.  The closest thing I can say it runs like is 6013.  Slag brushes right off.  Buy a pound and try it. OR come on over to my place and try it. David
Reply:A/O would be my last resort but if you go that route here is a little trick. When A/O welding in the wind always weld into the wind. The flame protects your weld. If you weld going away from the wind it blows right into the weld puddle and oxidizes it.
Reply:I agree with DAVID R.NEVER WELD IN THE RAIN!!!!!!!!!!18 gA. WOW!6013 is a medium penetration rod for general purpose work all positions. That would take a LOT of skill!I would use 110 wire feed FCAW  .024 for windy conditions on 18ga.Just hit the weld with a stainless tooth brush after.Last edited by Donald Branscom; 04-13-2008 at 04:09 PM.
Reply:AgSpecialties, I will add that you will probably find out that the Really small rods are gonna cost a bit more than 3/32" and up.  It has been quite awhile since I have bought any, but if i remember correctly they were a good bit more per pound than the more normal size rods.  The 6011 is a fast freeze rod, and penetrates more than the fil-freeze 6013.  I personally stuck with the 6013 on  less than 16ga sheet because I didn't like the added penetration and harsh arc of the 6011.Last edited by Hammack_Welding; 04-13-2008 at 07:31 PM.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:"O2 axy is out of the question. To much time."It sure is. I thought you had a hole or two to fix, in bad conditions. Oldtimer:Thanks for the tip. My friends are also desk workers. Tips are hard to come by.   FWIW: I bumped a torch valve with my glove, mid coupon, and fought an oxidizing flame for the last inch. Since it has no feather, even though I looked at the flame, I didn't catch it. Should have seen the pointy tip. I will next time. 9-11-2001......We Will Never ForgetRetired desk jockey. Reply:Ag Specialties, you might try Uniweld's E71T-GS in .035 flux core wire. I'm not a fan of flux core but this is the best welding flux core I'Ve used. I like it a lot better than Lincoln's stuff. LWS clued me in to it and he was right. Craig, glad I could help. Another trick, tighten the packing nuts on your torch valves tight enough to where a bump won't move them. Heh,heh. After you do this a while you will recoginize the property of your flame, neutral, etc., just by it's color and the sound it makes.

Reply:Originally Posted by MAC702Where are you finding .024" FC wire?To the OP,If this was my job I'd be using .030" or .035" FC wire, like the aforementioned Lincoln Innershield as a preference, but .045" would work too and could be run from my TB's feeder instead of from the Passport. The .045" NR211 is a wire, not a stick...
