Reply:Not the way you are The cost of all fuel is starting to drive the price up on several things. I don't understand why people continue to drive and burn up feul like nothing going on. Sometime in the near future the general public is going haft to start using their heads and learn to stop wasting so much fuel. I know people who drive to the store every night for something small, then go back out later for coffee. I would think it might make more sense to buy coffee at the store and make it themselves at home. Man they would save a bunch. With so many cell phone out there, people could call ahead on their way home from work and pick up the necessary things rather then go back out after they are home. Oops , I guess I got started, Sorry.I know one thing, I can think of better ways to waste my money then driving on aimless trips for nothing. Less driving means more toys Miller DVI2Lincoln Precision Tig 225Thermodynamics Cutmaster 38Everything else needed.
Reply:Everone does to some extent, it's called life and sometimes it sucks!I collect my own gases due to the exhorbitant delivery fees chargedOn the diesel front... Could be worse, somewhere between 70 and 80% of the cost of fuel in the UK is tax! Of course the VAT (17.5% sales tax) is added AFTER the 'fuel duty' so the fuel tax is, err taxed!! You'll just have to find some really thick Al to weld and use 100% He
Reply:You know we are paying 5.02 a US gal of diesel and 4.55 a US gal for regular gas here in Canada. It's sucks big time. Miller DVI2Lincoln Precision Tig 225Thermodynamics Cutmaster 38Everything else needed.
Reply:Not even close! Up to £1.30/litre here for diesel. (Roughly) converts to over $8/US gallon
Reply:Ah, Missed that your were from the UK. I thought about going over there not long ago. As it turns out, my father was born in Newfoundland back in 1935 before it was part Canada. So that means I can move to the UK if I wanted to LOL.Miller DVI2Lincoln Precision Tig 225Thermodynamics Cutmaster 38Everything else needed.

Reply:Look up my post from almost a year ago. I was amazed at how people are still driving at 70 or 80 miles per hour down the highway. I am just NOW starting to see trucks limiting their speed to 65 and under...amazing! The human race...to little, too late. Reply:I make my own biodiesel, cost last year worked out to about 40 cents a litre.  Found a cheap source of methanol (largest cost) so it will work out to about 30 cents a litre this year.   Bit messy, gathering the waste oil, but hey it's cheap!  Originally Posted by jamlitYou know we are paying 5.02 a US gal of diesel and 4.55 a US gal for regular gas here in Canada. It's sucks big time.
Reply:Zap, at least 3 times in the last couple months I've loaded my pickup with empty cylinders and took off for the lws. Probably more to do with unanticipated demand than the price of fuel, but I feel your pain.

Reply:Depends on if you want to buy a processor or make one.   Sure you're not thinking of WVO, or SVO?   That can get kinda pricey.   The cost to make my processor was a couple of hundred dollars.   Already had the water heater. Here is an example:http://www.biodieselcommunity.org/appleseedprocessor/Any question fire away! Reply:I have now traded vehicles with my wife.  In CA I am paying about $.19 for diesel.  I drive about 60 miles a day (and I'm a cronic speeder) so I'm only getting about 17mpg in the Dodge 2500/Cummins.  My wife drives 7 miles per day and so I am driving the Canry now and saving about $88 a month.Hobart 140 Handler w/ gasHyperTherm Powermax 380 Plasmaoxy/acetylene
Reply:When I recently filled up with about 300 gallons; I told a guy with me: I bought whole trucks, -with an "s"- for less money than this fuel just cost.    AND...  Not only did the trucks run good, they had more fuel in 'em than we just bought! Sad but true!Last edited by denrep; 04-11-2008 at 12:03 AM.
Reply:$1.27 a liter where I'm at guys...that would be (3.79 X $1.27) $4.81 a gallonand our dollar is on par with yours. Could be a lot worse.
Reply:nah... we have industrial diesel that is more expensive but never shortage... people have a problem when they start buying from a gas station for industy... you get a long que, people asking question and investigate and get fine if you used it for Industry...Argon and propane? Reply:Nope, just dump it in the tank and go.  The engine actually runs a lot better because of better lubrication properties in the bio.Basically there are two ways to burn veggie oil  SVO (Straight Veggie Oil) is where you burn WVO (Waste Veggie Oil) without conversion.  However, you need (generally) a seperate tank, a way to heat the veggie, and filters).  Bio is where you chemically change the WVO with methanol and a catalyst (usually sodium) to break down oil into glycerin and other undesirables, which is drained off.   You then wash the mix with water several times, then dry it and put in your tank. This is a very simplified explanation of both, any more questions fire away!  Originally Posted by RussellFDid you have to modify your engine in anyway to be able to burn this stuff?
Reply:Opps, I posted quickly and didn't proof read.  I'm paying around $4.19 gallon for diesel.Hobart 140 Handler w/ gasHyperTherm Powermax 380 Plasmaoxy/acetylene
Reply:umm...let's see...I paid $AUD1.59 a litre for diesel the other day.  1 US Gal = 3.79 litres.  So...1 US Gal would cost me (counting on fingers here)....$AUD6.03... BUT... $AUD1 only gets you $US0.9314(and that can get you into trouble on Ebay), so what I am paying is equivalent to $US5.62 (or so).  Trouble is, I am fresh out of greenbacks and have to use what the boss pays me...Also...how come diesel is currently 18 cents a litre - 68 cents a litre more expensive than garden variety unleaded??  Ain't it (diesel) one of the first products out of the cracking tower??  On the news tonight, they were blaming Indian and Chinese power generating stations - don't they mostly use coal??[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]Global warming = rising sea levels = more fishing spotsBring it on...
Reply:Someone around here is making a business out of biodiesel. Got the local Swap Sheet, there's 2 ads. First one says "Biodiesel. Call for details." The other ad, from the same outfit, is offering 5 cents a gallon for used fryer oil. The first ad also says it's only available April 1st to December 31st.
Reply:That's what I can't figure out.  It's about $3.69 for 87 octane unleaded but diesel is over $4.00 and diesel is complete in less refining steps than gasoline.   Diesel should be cheaper than gas.   Another thing I can't figure out, here along the west side of California, we are first to recieve the oil off the ships and we refine it right here, but both gas and diesel are more expensive here than they are in other states further away from the shipping ports and refineries.   So trucking the same gas and fuel from the same refineries to hundreds of miles accross country decreases the price???  Something doesn't add up here.  I smell a family of rats.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op

Reply:I'm beginning to get worried that my company may eventually have to make cutbacks somewhere to offset what diesel is costing. Running around 40 or 50 garbage trucks every day adds up to well over 1000 gallons a day. We have made the switch to Ultra Low Sulfur also.
Reply:I'm in the hauling and rigging business. It costs over $800 to fill the tanks on my truck. and I get about 5 miles to the gallon. My fuel costs alone are about 80 cents a mile.Customers have a hard time accepting the fact that everything costs so much to do now. And lots of them confuse what I do with trucking. Most truckers will drive around for fuel money and enough to eat.I always hear about how they got some freight moved for $1.50 a mile or some such nonsense.Joewww.CummingsHauling.comOriginally Posted by DesertRider33That's what I can't figure out. I smell a family of rats.

Reply:Just figuring out the fuel surcharge for friday's job.Price of fuel is 4.30 plus I told my wife to charge 75 cents a mile fuel surcharge. And the worst part is I am going to have to raise hourly rates soon too. With the price of living going up so high,,,,,,well what can I say, this sucksJoewww.CummingsHauling.com
Reply:Yep, diesel is the first thing that comes off a barrel of oil. The excuse for the higher than gasoline price is because they have to remove the sulphur is what they tell us. Remember when unleaded hit the market and it was a nickle higher than regular even though they didn't have to add lead to it. The excuse then was the extra refining steps to make it. Bull. The price is higher because we have to have it.America runs on diesel. Everything we have to have is moved by train and truck and they all burn diesel. Add in all the commercial and private diesel powered vehicles and there is a huge market.
Reply:The corner station on my way iin to work was $4.25 for Diesel Mon AM, up from $4.19 last Friday.  The cost is always higher in SoCal.  It's funny, I'm surrounded by refineries and oil towns and we still take the hit w/o all of the transportation costs to ship it to more rural areas.  It just doesn't make sense.Hobart 140 Handler w/ gasHyperTherm Powermax 380 Plasmaoxy/acetylene
Reply:Gas went up about 20 cents since I last posted on this discussion .   I think Iraq should start subsidizing our oil needs, since we've been subsidizing their war for so long now.  I hear they have many millions of dollars in reserve now from oil sales.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:Maybe the government has increased the fuel prices to make up for a poor economy?  They know we need gas and cannot make us spend our money on much else. And how about this garbage...  Here in Florida we have been placed on sever water restrictions due to drought problems here.  Now the water companies are adding on additional fees to your water bill to make up for the money they lost from us not watering lawns etc.  I do not see why we (the consumer) always have to make up for the losses.  We only did what we were asked and now we have to pay for it.  And do you think they will ever remove that fee?  No way!  It is there to stay even if there are no water restrictions. The state pulled the same crap with our turnpike.  They added the tolls to pay for the road and were supposed to remove them when the road was paid for.  Well it was paid for years and years ago and we are paying record high tolls to drive on this road. What a JOKE!Build a Barstool Racer at BarFlyRacers.com!
Reply:Well, in CA they're about to pass a law that will allow supermarkets and other places of business to charge you $.25 per bag for your groceries.  They figure that they have a CRV (cash redemption value) added to other forms of plastics and why not bags to encourage less use. They are now forcing you to BYOB bring your own bags. (no, not bring your own beer)  :drinkupHobart 140 Handler w/ gasHyperTherm Powermax 380 Plasmaoxy/acetylene
Reply:And the sad thing is the bags do not even cost .25 each.  And then I am sure a new law will pass to charge a special "bag" tax because it has to sit and break down in the garbage dumps or to help offset the cost of recycling each bag.Start shopping at Costco...Build a Barstool Racer at BarFlyRacers.com!
Reply:The bags they use at the grocery store are so thin and cheap that they are already decomposing before they get out of the store.   By the time they get to the landfill there probly isnt anything left of them.  Many times, the groceries have fell out the bottom of the bags before they made it to the kitchen!  Those bags are definitely NOT worth 25 cents, probly not even 2.5 cents.   All this California taxing is why I have wanted to move back to Arizona ever since I got here.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op

Reply:I believe the high fuel prices are contibuting to the poor economy, not making up for it. If you are spending all your money buying fuel you don't have any left to spend on anything else.

Reply:Change the speed limit back down to 55. I will say again, I see people everyday still driving 70, 80 or 85 miles per hour down the highway. The change in speed increases gas consumption exponentially. I did some calculations on it last year and if the people in Washington DC alone stopped driving fast, it would save something like  1 million gallons  of fuel per DAY. edit > I found the thread: http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...as+consumptionThis is my post: http://weldingweb.com/showpost.php?p=51016&postcount=18Last edited by MicroZone; 04-15-2008 at 12:20 PM.John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
