i have to cracks on my motor case and some one told me that it is really hard 2 get a good weld sense all the oil that gets absorbed by the metal any thoughts on how to fix it or how to prep it for welding?4 1/2 inch angle grindermiller thunder bolt
Reply:What process are you going to use? Grind it out, drill a hole where you think the VERY end of the crack may end, heat it up a little thereby bringing the contaminants to the top, TIG weld it as normal.John - fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!- bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:And what are you going to weld it with? Your dc thunderbolt and some alum rods?, possible but expensive for the rods. Vee it real good and heat it with a torch to burn the oil out. It it was stripped out and soaked to remove the oil that would be better if not clean it the best you can. You might have to weld it and see if there any pin holes if there is grind it back out and reweld. If you are using a mig and a spoolgun 4043 wire should work fine...BobBob WrightSalem, Ohio Birthplace of the Silver & Deming Drillhttp://groups.yahoo.com/group/southbend10k/http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sawking/1999 Miller MM185 w/ Miller 185 Spoolmate spoolgun
Reply:thanks. i don't have enough experience to weld it. so the guy i am apprenticing for will be doing it. I'm not sure what he will use my guess is tig.4 1/2 inch angle grindermiller thunder bolt
