Dear Welding Experts & Enthusiasts, Good day! It would be great if you guys can give me some input on whether this material: JIS G3103 SS400 is easily weldable? This material is a mild steel grade that is quite commonly produced in Japan. I have checked the chemical composition for this material and the chemical composition is as such: Min Max Iron Fe 99.8999 99.9999 Phosphorus P 0.0500 Sulfur S 0.0500I have also done some read up on the weldability of materials and found out that as the carbon content increases, the weldability decreases. (quoted from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weldability) Hence, considering this fact, since the above mentioned material has little or insignificant carbon content, does that mean that this material has a very good weldability? Please advise. What is the weldability if compared to AISI 1018 and AISI 1045?Thanks for the input in advance! I really appreciate that!
Reply:Are you sure it is G3103 and not G3101?I could not find any reference to a grade SS400 for G3103. However SS400 is a grade for G3101.G3101 SS400 is an almost exact match to the American standard A36 meaning it is very readily welded. Since the specification does not list a maximum carbon (C) or manganese (Mn) limit you should get a tag or some sort of verification as to that batch's carbon and manganese content from the mill before using it on any structure built to code.However, G3106 SM400 is almost the same thing and is specifically designed for welded structures as its specification list a maximum carbon (C) and manganese (Mn) limit.G3101 is intended for boiler and pressure vessel construction.Visit Tensaiteki.com |
