Im going to buy a Argon cylinder for my 250 amp mig that I buy once I figure out if im going with Red or Blue.A 200cf argon bottle is pretty standard i think.  Question is, about how much do they cost to buy? Is there any place I can get them online or at a good price here around Dallas Tx. I actually live in Ennis just south of Dallas about 30mins.Im mainly checking prices really, my LWS says im looking at $430.Also, anyone have an idea how long they last...

Reply:I bought a 80 CF off ebay brand new for 130 bucks shipped and that was the cheapest I could find anywere.I went to fill it at gasco here in Dallas and it cost me 18 bucks to fill. So it was about 148 all together. I asked them how much I could have got one there for and they said it would have been about 160 filled so they wasnt to much higher. If I buy another one I will probably just get it at gasco. I have priced them again on ebay and they are 154 shipped now and it has only been 1 year since I got mine.Even thought you own it when you go to have it filled they will just swap it out for another one already filled so you will always have a bottle with a good hydro date.Last edited by 737mechanic; 06-02-2008 at 12:24 PM.
Reply:check around on craigslist, i buy "owner" oxygen tanks off people who think they are worth nothing.  I normally pay arund $75 for a 245 cubic foot tank, to it to my LWS and they swap it for whatever i want.  Argon, C25, oxygen, 98-2, they are all the same cylinders.

Reply:clark-kentski very funny, yeah I was more or less wanting to know how many hours of welding it will last before I need to refill. Anyways, I think Im getting ripped off!!!I'll call gasco in dallas and get them to quote me I guess.I don't mind driving up there the first time to buy the tank.
Reply:How long the gas in the tank will last depends on what the flow rate you set is. At 20 cubic feet per hour a 200 should last for about 10 hours. Increasing or decreasing the flow rate will change your time. duh. Don't forget to turn the tank off when finished. Even a small leak will drain the tank faster than you expect. As far as where to look for the tank I agree, I'd look local first. Usually the LWS price is a bit higher, but the tank comes filled. When you add in the fill they usually come out pretty darn close in price. Also see what your LWS considers customer owned in size. I have a bunch of 282CF O2 bottles that I got thru a hydro shop. I can't swap them locally easily. Every so often I get the guy to swap one but I don't bet on it. Craigs list, yard sales, tool auctions are good places to look for used tanks. They show up from time to time.I can't say how good the price you got is. I rent all my large cylinders. The last Big cyl. I tried to buy was a 4500psi air bottle (300cf+) and the place I looked wanted $400 I believe.
Reply:well I called around and got a quote for a 200cf full for $250Then I got a quote from the welding shop right next to the one that quoted me $430 and they can sell a 170cf for $223 full. Can you believe that...
Reply:Try Rural King if one is available in Texas; they're like Wal-Mart here in Kentucky. They have a swap program too.
Reply:I just bought my first one,not sure of the cf but its a size smaller then a oxygen bottle(4' )paid 285.00 full 90$ to refill/exchange.
Reply:You guys are paying to much for gas.I buy 6 bottles of 300cf argon for $39.00
Reply:where are you located boatbuilder...
Reply:Boatbuilder, welcome to the forum. Who is your supplier? Airgas, GTS?chadwickz71 Just for clarification, he is refering to just the gas not the gas and tank. It's often cheaper to get large bottles swaped than smaller ones. It costs me less to get 282cf of O2 swapped than it does my 100cf o2 bottle. However large bottles usually must be leased/rented.
Reply:I just bought a 125 cuft Argon a month ago cost me $200 for the bottle (on sale) and then it is $42 for the gas to exchange it, and they offered to return/exchange the bottle if I was not happy with the size of it. But just last night I scored a 320cu ft cylinder privately owned for $220 from Craigslist. My advice would be call every LWS within 50 miles and get prices then go to your closest/favorite one and tell then you would like to keep all your business with them but so and so has it for less. That’s what I did and my guy gave me contractor pricing to the tune of almost a 50% discount on one of my bottles. -Dan
Reply:Sometimes its who you know. I have a friend at a place called BOC gasses. Argon bottle filled costed me $75! Smokin deal
Reply:I live on Long Island,New York. We buy gas from Airweld . There are several suppliers in the area and they all are very competitive

Reply:I buy my Ar and C-25 in cylinders labeled 248 cu/ft from Praxair.  A couple of months ago I picked up an empty Praxair customer owned 248 cu/ft Ar cylinder for $106 from a fab shop gone out of business when I saw their ad on Craigslist. I swapped it for a filled cylinder for $87.  Total price for that one - $193, but I've heard Ar fill prices have gone up a bit since then.  Good luck.ScottMiller XMT 350 CC/CV w/gas solenoid opt.Miller S-22A wirefeederBernard 400A "Q" gunMiller Spoolmatic 30A / WC-24C-K 200A torch/gas lensWeldcraft WC-18 watercooled torchHypertherm Powermax 30Victor O/A

Reply:And make sure when you buy a (so called OWNER bottle)  its not a rental that someone thinks they own it!! Seen it happen before
Reply:Around here in Canadian dollars, $75 filled is cheap. I called around and the going price is $200 before taxes. And I dont think that includes the first fill either.
