I have a trailblazer 250 with added Hf box, also have a maxstar 150 stl...I have always had a low opinion of mig welding for many reasons, don't really consider it welding. BUT, due to recently aquired sheet metal fab. work, for cost effectivness, I need to purchase mig welder for shop. Most of my exp. in migging was with the millermatic machines, which are pricey. Does anyone know of a less expensive machine that will still produce quality performence. Any advice is greatly appreciated....
Reply:I guess a lot depends on what you might do with the machine in the future. If it's strictly a sheetmetal machine I might lean towards a 110v machine like the MM140 with the infinate control vs fixed taps. Usually I hesitate to recomend a 110v machine but sheetmetal is one of the things they are good for. Any Lincoln or Hobart with an infinate control work probably work fine. The fixed tap machines are nice too, but require a bit more tuning as far as I've seen. Something in the 220v class like the MM180 or similar hobart's or Lincolns would be my perfered unit, giving you more options and power. Some of the Hobart's in this range that I have used are very nice machines and cost a bit less than the Millers.Top of the list might be a nice suitcasse feeder to run off the TB, if you see the posibility of wanting more portability and more power. Running the TB to use it in the shop would be the only down side I see to the suitcase feeders other than the price. |
