can these bits be welded with any success. if so what do you suggest here's my plan Ive been doing a bit of tile and scraping mortar with a razor sucks. the widest chisel i can find for my sds is 2" i would like to weld a 4 " scraper blade to that for scraping mortar. they make a bit for this for sds max but i don't wanna shell out for a new drill at the moment any opinions are welcome thanks350P 30A spool gun cut master 51  syncro 250 other stuff " take a dog off the street and make him prosper and he will not bite you sad the same cannot be said for man" i didnt use punctuation just to piss you off
Reply:there is a blade that is made for a sawsall that is just what you described.  as for what you are inquiring i would either tig or braze a blade on to the bit.
Reply:umahunter, I've set way  more than my fair share of tile, and I wonder... what is it that you are scraping?  Is there an easier way? With a bit more info I may be able to make your life easier.
Reply:I've made several custom bits either with std hex shanks or sds max bits. I've had mixed luck. Most will do what I needed for a while but usually break. None have been made for chipping concrete or mortar. Made a wide "spade" for loosening dirt that held up OK untill the dimwits at work tried it on stone, snaped right away. All the bits I used were dead anyways so no loss if they failed. As said what are you trying to do? If you are trying to remove old composite tile from a masonry floor it might work. I thought about building one for a job like that. I had planned on making a plate that standard scrapper blades mounted to and attach it to an old bit. It was more a power scraper than a chisel. Ended up just using a large home made long handled scraper as I couldn't get my chipping gun back from the guy who borrowed it in time.
Reply:i am basically trying to make a bit for scraping old thin set off concrete slabs it goes pretty fast with a chisel in the hammer drill but will go even faster  with a wider blade i bought some harbor freight cheapies to try my first thought was to drill to holes and attach the scraper blade with 2 grade 8 bolts but the chisel dulled bits in seconds350P 30A spool gun cut master 51  syncro 250 other stuff " take a dog off the street and make him prosper and he will not bite you sad the same cannot be said for man" i didnt use punctuation just to piss you off

Reply:You might have better luck if you anneal the bits then try and drill them. The problem I found was that the bits snapped above the weld in the HAZ. Since I didn't really have anything really invested in them it didn't really matter. Give it a try and see what happens. Never had any luck with brazing holding up under impact conditions when we tried to use that to build chisels for stamp work. Most of the stuff I made was migged or stick welded and I know I cranked some heat into the bits.I would try and keep it so that the scraper blade is bolted on if posible. I would try and weld a piece of drilled flat stock to a bit as my first thought. That way you could change the scraper if needed. You might also try to grind some V notches in a 2" wide point, so it looks something like this VVVVVVV. I picked up a bit like this at a used tool shop and it works great for removing thin materials and thinning down a surface. I think it was designed as a sculpters chisel for facing stone as I've seen hand held ones sold for that purpose. It does leave a groved surface however most of the time.BTW a needle scaler makes short work of thin overlays. It is messy (& noisy) and you only do about 1 sq inch at a time but it leaves you with a great toothed surface. You will need a good sized compressor to run one. We taped the paddle handle on and had a 3' hose with a ball valve to control the scaler and turn it off. Holding that handle as you abraded square ft one inch at a time led to cramps fast.It is also posible to get adapters that allow you to use different bits in different guns. We have an SDS max to SDS adapter that allows us to use the smaller bits in the larger SDS max gun and I have a splined bit to SDS for my old bosch, as well as a splined to 1/2 chuck adapter.I got a 4" asphalt cutter that will mount in my hex shank/spline Bosch. It weights a ton. It works OK for scraping and breaks block but would be better in a bigger gun than mine.Last edited by DSW; 07-03-2008 at 06:32 AM.
Reply:Now I get it...Not so much tiling, as UN-tiling.  Sorry, no help with bit welding as I have not tried it. Sounds like the other guys have nailed it though. Either spend the bucks for tools that WILL do it, or experiment and  get limited results. Best of luck.
