hey there, i was wondering if anyone knew how much they mill off the face and root down into the base metal when doing a guided bend test for cert.?( exp. a 4g or 3g ) i was just curious. thanks 4runnin.
Reply:There are sooooo many different certs., that we would need to know which one you are going for exactly to tell. On my own there was no milling involved. The backup bar was scarfed off the coupons were cut out of the plate and then bent. That's it, the condition was analyzed and then you either pass or fail.City of L.A. Structural; Manual & Semi-Automatic;"Surely there is a mine for silver, and a place where gold is refined. Iron is taken from the earth, and copper is smelted from ore."Job 28:1,2Lincoln, Miller, Victor & ISV BibleDanny
Reply:Don't take this for 100% fact, as codes can vary:They don't have to take off any more than what it takes to clean up the surface of the base material.  At that point, they will usually do a visual inspection.  If any defects deem it to be rejectable, there's no reason to bend it.  For example, if you have too much porosity, or undercut that it too deep/long, they don't even have to bend it.In most cases, the welder will cut out and prep his own bend coupons with a grinder.  This gives him the opportunity to grind a little more than somebody else might (this is not why it's done though)...but there are also codes that will specify how much reduction of base material is acceptable.Last edited by Engloid; 07-10-2008 at 01:22 AM.
