Guys,I'd appreciate some help for a relative newcomer. I recently bought a 115 v Harbor-Freight-ish welder from a guy on craigslist. Before anyone gets aggravated, I would have LOVED to get the Lincoln I've always wanted (and will someday), but I got this welder, 5 spools of wire, a full 80 cu/ft tank of argon and regulators for $85.00. I think that I did OK on the deal... The welder looks to be fairly well made and I'd like to try welding a little aluminum, but I have a question about a replacement liner. There are a number of types of MIG guns listed on WeldingDepot and other sites (Tweco, etc) that you can buy replacement plastic liners for, but I don't know if they are compatible with the Chinese welder that I bought (metric vs SAE threads, etc). Any hints on what to look for in order to ID what type of liner I should buy? Would a pic of the gun's internals help?Thanks,Waldo1

Reply:The Al kit for a Lincoln SP135+ comes with a new plastic cable liner with a spiral wire end at the gun tip, new drive wheel, contact tip, and plastic in and out guides for the wire drive. Relative to which end of the liner gets trimmed off after it is inserted in the cable, the installation of the aluminum cable liner is the opposite of the liner for other filler wires. Good performance welding Al with a converted MIG unit is highly dependent on keeping the gun cable as straight as possible and having the spool and drive wheel tensions set up just right. The point being, it won't be as simple as changing out the liner if your really want it to work, and if it did work, you may be limited in the Al thickness by the welder specs. If you are compelled to pursue it, I'd start off with getting measurements from the existing HF components and asking for corresponding measurements from welder manufacturer tech support lines.
