Question, what rod material should be used to weld Titanium (grade 12) to Duplex (alloy 2205)?Where or what reference material could I use to find this in the future?Thank you,BennyB
Reply:what are you using the titanium for? if you dont mind me asking.http://www.aloumac.ca/
Reply:This is a high pressure 2000 psi application exposed to corrosive media.
Reply:Unless you happen to have an electron beam welder handy, I would suggest brazing it.Titanium welds well to other refractory metals, such as tantalum, but forms brittle intermetallics with almost all other metals if you try fusion welding.Other suggestions, inertial welding or diffusion welding.  You need to limit the alloying.Good luckRegards, KbnitI r 2 a perfessional
Reply:Welding procedure qualification and specification exsists for joining these two metals but NOT by fusion welding.Alloy duplex stainless steel 2205 is a second generation ferritic stainless. It is steel. So it is like trying to weld aluminum to stainless. bottom line. There is a paper written on this in Practical Welding. See: http://www.welding-advisers.com/PRAC...etterNo33.htmlFusion welding will not work.Otherwise welding titanium grade12 to stainless will not work.AWS certified welding inspectorAWS certified welder
Reply:"Otherwise welding titanium grade12 to stainless will not work. "Don,I respectfully disagree.  As I stated above, titanium can be welded to stainless by means of electron beam welding, inertial welding, or diffusion welding. As can stainless to aluminum. As can titanium to aluminum.Best regards, KbnitI r 2 a perfessional

Reply:Agree, Titanium to duplex stainless steel would only be welded using conventional means by GTAW soldering using silver or copper lithium based solders, normally performed where titanium linings exit vessel nozzles where the Ti flange is GTAW to the Ti sleeve, then "soldered" to the BM flange if deemed necessary, prior to machining the gramaphone on the Ti flange.Usually, titanium linings are applied to cheap CS base material by explosive bonding, and the Ti lining extends through CS nozzles etc. I have never heard of Ti and DSS combined, but who knows ?If it is absolutely necessary to weld these two materials together as part of a full thickness pressure retaining joint, then I recommend processes that do not involve electric arcs or BM melting. Friction welding is a simple method that may work.By the way - Ti12 is alloyed with Mo and Ni for higher strength and wear and is used in erosion applications.
