I'm welding 4130 tubing and was interested in using the metallurgically controlled welding rod. The type I can find for example is Turbaloy 4130 or AMS 6457. Would these require post heat treating? I use ER80 rod now and it does not require post heat treating. Also would this type of filler rod not have the elasticity required (would it be too brittle)?
Reply:If you're welding 4130 material with a 4130 based filler, PWHT is absolutely necessary. Ductility is considerably less than mild steel fillers. This is why the mild steel fillers are commonly used for aircraft, automotive/racing use, etc. |
