I need a wire welder at home for welding 16 and 14 guage steel tubing 1/2" diameter to 1" diameter. I would like to have a welder that works trouble free.A gas bottle is fine only if it is affordable. The local welding supply wants a 10 year lease on a large cylinder about $700.00. Screw that I will keep using my 40 year old stick welder.What should I buy?We bought a new Lincoln wire welder at work for about $2000.00 it is basically worthless. The wire keeps welding itself to the copper guide thing in the handle. Take it apart put anti splatter on it then it works fine for 1 weld then the wire stick and you have to take it apart again. The company replaced the handle and the whole welder but we still have the same problem. We have tried several different gasses the welder still gives up trouble and the company will not give us a refund.My neighbor bought a core flux welder the welds look like tiny BBs stuck to the metal. He grinds down the weld and welds over it. Grinds it down and welds over it again. About 3 times of welding and grinding and it looks useable but a 6 inch long weld takes 30 minutes of screwing around.A friend has a wire flux home wire welder the welds look really bad but not as bad as my neighbor.Last edited by gary350; 09-29-2008 at 05:17 PM.

Reply:Yep, for best help, put your location in your profile.I vote for the HH140, too. I'd even try www.toolking.com and look for a reconditioned one and save even more.Sounds like square tubing for ornamental or security stuff? GMAW with gas shielding will vastly make a difference in postweld cleaning and prepaint prep.
Reply:Gary - I agree with Broccoli1. I have been using the Miller 140 AutoSet for over a year and I consider it trouble-free. I am still learning myself, but I have a small hobby business that requires simple welding. This machine is easy to setup and use and produces clean, solid welds. Locally a 80 cf tank costs around $150 filled. That is much better in the long run than leasing a tank. Just exchange it for a full one for about $22-24.
