Question, what rod material to use to weld Nickel (grade N201) to SS (304L).I am somewhat new to selecting the correct rod/filler material.  How would I go about determining the correct ROD/Filler material for this ?Thank you,BennyB
Reply:ERNi-1 is commonly used for welding N200 and N201 to stainless, carbon, inconels, etc.  I looked it up just to double check, and it is in fact what we use on our WPS's for welding P41 to P8 materials.
Reply:Thank you.
Reply:Is there some reference book I could get that would have this information in?  I want to be able to figure out the right material without having to post a question to the form.....
Reply:Unfortunately, there is rarely a clear-cut answer.  Our procedures come from trial and error, manufacturer suggestions, metallurgists, and ASME code requirements.  However, I would pick up the Procedure Handbook of Arc Welding.  Its cheap from Lincoln, and is basically the welder's bible.  For example, there are two pages in the stainless steels section that have flow charts describing the strengths/weaknesses of the various stainless steels, and the filler metals commonly used to weld them.  It's great for typical joints, but at least gives some insight when choosing less common dissimilar joints.
Reply:The Schaeffler or WRC diagram is handy to assist with disimilar welding / consumable selection based on Ni and Cr equivalents.Cheers
Reply:AWS Welding Handbook, Volume 4, "Metals and Their Weldability", covers correct filler metals to be used for just about anything you're going to weld.Regards, KbnitI r 2 a perfessional
