Hi,I am new to this forum I am trying to build a handrail I have seen it done once and from what i understood from it was this i get the measurement of the platform on top and i need a measure ment from the top step to the bottom floor(i want the rail to go into the floor) and a measure ment from the top of the platform to the end of steps(horizontal measurement) and i just plug that into the diagram?is this correct? what tools do u use to measure this the person i saw doing it just used a measuring tape and bent it to sort of a 90 deg but there has to be a more precise way?any help would be appreciated.
Reply:I posted this a few years ago. http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=5151You haven't provided enough information for the calculation of the lentgh of the rail. I would do it by laying out a piece of metal across the steps and cutting it to length, then use it as a pattern. A problem you will run into if you build the rails as drawn is the front post on the platform will not have a place to be mounted.A few other members have also posted helpful techniques for building railing. Reply:There's 'a little more' to designing, fabbing and installing railings than meets the eye. Kudos to Fat Bastard & Tapwelder! Other items one may wish to consider is placement of the foot mounting plates--so they don't serveas trip points for people's feet. Attachment and edge distance for the foot plate mounts (especially if anchored into concrete.) Location of the mount plate holes for drilling and fastener installation.Strength of the railing assembly and attachment system. Any measured drainage slope, out of square/parallel, flatness of the mounting surfaces, needs tobe checked; etc., etc., etc.Blackbird |
