1040 steel

i have a piece of 1040 steel 2/4/108 inches long bolted from the bottom to a piece of 8/10 108 inches long of mild steel iam going to weld it to since it is bolted will i need to preheat the steel ill be stitch welding the steel 3 on 3 inch with a low carbon rod

Reply:Those are going to be difficult welds to keep from cracking, more so if the finished product is subject to flex.  Probably why it was originally bolted.Yes, you'll have to pre and post heat, but not because it is bolted, but because 1040 is a medium carbon steel that doesn't like cold welds. In a repair situation, the heating will be difficult to maintain because of the large size of the work.You probably meant low-hydrogen, rather than low-carbon electrode. I would say go with low hydrogen electrode, XX18, preheat, peen, postheat. Knowing the actual application could change this.Good Luck
