Hey guys ,for you smart ones, can some of you  explain this in a somewhat more simple way?  Just when I think I understand it all I just get more confused. (GMAW) Some machines have a fixed slope and others allow you to adjust slope for bead apperance and penetration.  Most of the time we dont even think about it or its not an issue. I've been using many different cv machines 3 phase and single 220.  They all, like most machines, have certain arc characteristics.   Pondering about these different arc characteristics made me wonder about slope and inductance. All machines  will produce a different arc and somewhat different bead but with same readings.  We know wire, gasses, guns ect.. relate to it as well. Machines I use, Miller cp 302, MM252, old 3phase Airco 250, and Lincoln 185.Again just wondering how much slope and or if inductance might have anything to do with it.There aren't any problems or anything, just got me thinking and wanting a better understanding of the subject.  I dont even know if I can spell it...lol weld it like you own it
Reply:In simplest terms it is like a Choke on a motor- allowing you to dial in the sweet spot.orBy adjusting the Voltage and Amperage you are controlling the Slope-Imagine a See Saw- on one side is Amperage and on the other side is Voltage-Up on Amperage- down goes Voltage-  and the Slope is the angle those 2 make.Tapped machines have very little control of the slope( no way to adjust the weights on the see saw very much)Continuous Voltage selection allows for more control of the slope(You can fine tune the Voltage)Adding Slope control is like adding Friction control to the center of the See Saw- because the See Saw will be in numerous Playground conditionsbest this Vegetable can doLast edited by Broccoli1; 10-31-2008 at 06:32 PM.Ed Conleyhttp://www.screamingbroccoli.com/MM252MM211 (Sold)Passport Plus & Spool gunLincoln SP135 Plus- (Gone to a good home)Klutch 120v Plasma cutterSO 2020 benderBeer in the fridge

Reply:Here are two links that will help explain slope and inductance settings in short arc mig.http://www.locost7.info/files/tools/...ding+Guide.pdfhttp://www.esabna.com/EUWeb/MIG_handbook/592mig3_1.htmBasically, more slope limits short circuit current and reduces spatter, and too much slope causes stubbing.Increased inductance slows the rate of current change thus limiting short circuit current rise to reduce spatter, and it causes longer arc time between shorts thus making a "hotter" more fluid, flatter, smoother weld.At least that's what I think I read.
