having trouble with some hard surfacing on the o.d. of a 5" dia. hasteloy ring base metal (276) with colmonoy 5... trying to tig weld it- i have followed weld procedure with preheating and postheating but cannot get it to fuse without cracking. any suggestions?

Reply:I don't know the specific alloys in question, but MANY hardfacing/hard-surfacing fillers will "check crack" or "cross check". No matter what.If the filler you are using is subject to check cracking, there is pretty much nothing you can do about that (except use a different alloy not subject to cross checking). But cross checking is not a fault, it is just cosmetic (although it can look pretty severe!). The best laid schemes ... Gang oft agley ...
