Ok, what is a good tig machine to buy that is for beginners?
Reply:I started with a little Harbor Frieght tg welder and thought it was a decent little rig for what I paid for it, but then I wanted a better one. I ended up getting the Lincoln Precision tig 225 and WOW what a difference. Since I am just learning tig myself, I think getting a good machine is very important now that I have seen the difference. Just my 2 cents though.Miller DVI2Lincoln Precision Tig 225Thermodynamics Cutmaster 38Everything else needed.
Reply:How much was the Lincoln?
Reply:I agree with jamlit, get a decent one even as a 'starter'.  Keep you eye on craigslist (none in your area at the moment) and if you're willing to travel a little (Houston, Dallas, Louisiana, etc) and be patient you could find some prety good deals - red, blue or ??.  Ebay can be a good source too.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:Yeah I checked out Craigslist and nothing. :| I was looking on the miller website and I found the new miller diversion. "tig welding for dummies" lol.

Reply:hard to beat a thermal arc 185...for value and performance...
Reply:Go find a old used Miller Syncrowave 250, big machine but will do anything and will run on 240 single phase...Love mine had it for a while and bought it for round $1200 or so. Be warned it is big and heavy and ya need at least a 100 amps or so to run it...... but it will last for ever..... and there is nothing cheap about it.....Brandon

Reply:I had a Miller Syncrowave 180SD............Too big and took too much current to operate. I sold it and bought one of the new Miller Diversion 165 machines. FANTASTIC machine especially for a beginner. I've been welding up a storm on Aluminum, which I found very difficult with the Syncrowave. This unit is an inverter power supply. I'm running it on a 40A breaker with no issues. It will even run off my 6500 watt generator for total mobility.Roy BDartmouth, Mahttp://www.rvbprecision.comMM 185 MIGDiversion 165Purox W200 O/AGrizzly 9957 MillGrizzly 4030 Metal Band SawGrizzly 1050 Knife Belt SanderJet 1236 Metal LatheCM 14" Metal Band SawTP Blast Cabinet
Reply:Originally Posted by RojodiabloThis really depends on what you want to weld. Do you want to do steel, SS, and possibly titanium?? Or... deep down, do you want to be able to do aluminum?? If you want to do aluminum, you need an AC/DC machine. To just tig steel, then find a maxstar 150 or 200 to start. The 150 is a great value, as it will work on 110 or 220VAC. It will weld up to 1/4" steel, both tig and arc welding. Hunt down welders on offroad sites, car hobby sites. They are there for sale all the time. For aluminum, you need to be understanding that you are likely looking at a minimum of $1500 to start with a decent used welder. The least expensive AC/DC machine to even consider would be an econotig by miller. And that is a fairly unsophisticated machine, and is a bit limited on how thick it can weld, but it is a well built machine by a known manufacturer. And that part is just as important as getting a good price, to say the least.

Reply:Also, I see you are in Texas. Look up ' Weldersales ' here on weldingweb.com. He is a welder salesman, and he has both new and used machines. He is a great guy, and very helpful!!!!And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.

Reply:Ok, with me not knowing all that much about TIG, which machine would you suggest duane or Rojo that would be good for just learning on? I am not worried about aluminum, all of that will come with time.
Reply:Re-read my posts. The most common units I would suggest as starter machines are right there!!And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.

Reply:the diversion 165 from miller?
Reply:And most DC Stick welders can double as Tig Welders ! AC Sick welders not so easy. Lincoln makes an AC/DC 225 that can be tig welded with as does miller. They are heavy and use more electricity compared to the newer inverters. Dialarc 250's that were used in many vocational schools are AC/DC and would also work.I have tig welded with both HF 80 amp welders and machines costing 4 to 5 K. The electricity is just that. Electricity. Tuning the arc, gas control, remote amperage etc are all nice features but do little to help you learn in my opinion. The key to learning will not be in the machine but features can be helpful in the future.Any machine can be useful for a beginner. Too many features can be daunting but can be worked through. Too few may give you regrets in the future.Have a nice dayhttp://www.weldingdata.com/

Reply:I bought a used snycro  250I cant remember if I have a 50amp breaker or not, but power is not an issue as far as tripping it.The machine is great.  I like the fact I can go up to 300 amps if need to.The duty cycle is what I really like too.Folks seem to really like the track record history of performance. Also I found I could buy one for around 1100 - 1500 used.  Luckily I found one for 1200 with tons of extras.  Its the model I have always wanted since Moby Dick was a minnow and I just waited to justify buying one.  I like all the bells and whistles.I like the crater controlNow the one Jamlit bought new is a scream of a deal too.  Very nice for the price for sure. That was my other choice for brand new weld it like you own it
