I am thinking of attending the 4 week Hobart tig/stick pipe school. Has anyone out there attended this school or one of there pipe classes? Just trying to make sure I will get my moneys worth while trying to sharpen my pipe welding skills. Also do they have good job placement?
Reply:I graduated from the 9 month program at Hobart. Yes, I think they have good job placement. If I may ask, what's your goal in taking the course and what's your background in welding? The instructors are skilled, and the program is well organized. The value of the training is what you make of it. It's not cheap. If you go in with an open mind, and a good work ethic, you'll learn a lot. My goal was to use as much pipe, electricity, and burn as much 7018 rod as I could, each and every day. Guys who attended school and slept in the welding booths during the day didn't learn squat. Take the time to accomplish the basics, and then politely press the instructor for advanced tips and techniques. This is how you'll get the most for your month.Call them to find out if you're eligible to take the 4 week TIG/Stick pipe course as a standalone class. Usually it's the final installment in the nine month program. They may allow you to enroll in it as a standalone if you pass a few weld tests on plate first. Otherwise, they'll probably require you to take at least a few of the stick pipewelding classes as pre-requisites to the TIG/Stick class. If there's anything else you need to know, don't hesitate to ask...Benson's Mobile Welding - Dayton, OH metro area - AWS Certified Welding Inspector
Reply:I am in my final semester (4th /pipe) at a tech school. I also strive to burn as many rods, use as much gas, and bevel as many pipe as possible to be the best I can be and be and ready to get a good paying job without looking like a dummy. Unfortunately I may not be getting the instruction to prepare me when I get finished in May. I can put a good root in pipe any position and fill and cap and working on putting the root in with tig. I still have three months but I am prepared to invest in 4 more weeks with Hobart if needed and I'm convinced that it is worth the 1250 dollars and time. As it turns out they have started offering the 4 week classes but only after passing a 6G 2" carbon pipe and square butt joint ,flat Tig plate test. thanks dab
Reply:6G 2" pipe, is that TIG all the way or Stick; 6010 root and 7018 fill/cap? The 4 week class is spent working exclusively on 6" sch 80 pipe. If you can weld the 2" pipe all with TIG, and the 2" with stick already, you're proabably wasting your time spending 4 more weeks welding 6" pipe; it's much easier. What specific area of pipe welding are you interested in starting out in? Powerhouse, and steam pipe? Petroleum and Natural Gas? Chemical plants? What do you know about or what captures your interest? Or are you just looking for the highest pay for now??I may have other recommendations depending on your answer...Benson's Mobile Welding - Dayton, OH metro area - AWS Certified Welding Inspector

Reply:Don't mean to butt in Chris but what kind of work have you done since getting out of Hobart? Did they place you or did you have something lined up after school on your own.War Eagle
Reply:I finished early in '08. I suspect there's always a bunch of guys who goof off. They don't want to be there, but their parent make them go, or they welded a bit in high school shop, and think they already know everything they need.Like most things in life, when somebody else pays for it, most people don't respect or value it. I poured a big chunk of my retirement savings into school, so I expect what I learned to earn me all that money back plus much more.Schools like Hobart cost a student about $70 per day to attend. Too much money to just throw it away... Originally Posted by Tamper84JUst a question when did you graduate? I was there in 05 and sounds like a lot guys that where in my class. Reply:You will probably find that the Hobart welding classes will put a "Feather in your Cap). Sure can't hurt you when you look for a job Gordie -- "I believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant."
