Dumb plasma question?

Consider me dumb when it comes to plasma cutters, but I would like one anyway.  Why doesn't someone make a torch head with air valve and regulator to run off of an inverter based multiprocessor power source?  Or do they?  Like I said, I don't kow much about plasma cutters.Jack of all, master of none

Reply:There actualy have been a few attempts at producing combination welder/plasma cutters.....currently there are some chinese import units avaialble that have this capability. The main issues with the chinese units seem to be very poor reliability....and according to some postings in other areas of this site...many just plain do not work right out of the box.Plasma and welding processes are quite different in their voltage amperage requirements.....and in order to get the best combination of cut quality, cut speed, and consumable life the power supply output must be carefully manipulated at the beginning of the cut (proper ramp up of current and gas flow) and even more importantly at the end of the cut in order to produce the best performance. In reality....if you want a welder with great weld quality and reliability and a plasma cutter with the best speed, quality and consumable life in the same box.....the box would likely contain two separate power sources!Jim Colt
