Went into check steel prices after lunch today. All full stick prices3x3 11ga square tubing.......... 593x3 3/16 square tubing.......... 943" channel, med. wt. .............49.70Sheet metal: all 5x10 sheets18ga..............6316ga..............7414ga............8612ga.............130(this was an estimate, they didn't have any in stock and figured the new order price on a guess, sounded high)I'm wondering when to buy. Sure it's coming down, but it might go down further. Also, I'm wondering if the Stimulus Package is gonna drive the price of steel up, and maybe I better buy it right now before it goes through the roof."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:I plugged your question into my crystal ball and it replied: "you're damned if you do, and damned if you don't" I had a supplier call me today and asked if I knew what my requirements would be for 3rd and 4th quarter of this year. Being in the automotive industry, I aksed him: "is your crystal ball any better than mine?" I say roll the dice and buy now and get the project done before the weather breaks and you get busy Fire!, Fire! Oh wait, that's my torch...Lincoln PT-225 TIGLincoln 175 MIG
Reply:I wish I could just go check prices like that around here. I have to ask for a specific quote for each thing I want a price on and how many I want. They never post prices on new, only used by the pound.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op

Reply:Thanks. I guess I'll pull the plug, and get it nowThey've always seemed to be a pretty fair bunch of guys to deal with. It's a family business. He said if the order comes in cheaper, he'll average the price between the stock he has and the new order. If it's out of stock, I just pay the cheaper new order price."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:Samm, Now THIS is something I am educated in! I have been keeping track of some prices on a spreadsheet and don't have data older than a few weeks though. Excluding Home Depot, Sutherlands and Tractor Supply, my search has turned up the following at a local company: SHEET METAL24 ga, $1.24/sq ft22 ga, $1.28/sq ft20 ga, $1.94/sq ft18 ga, $2.48/sq ftANGLE IRON1/8 x 1x1, $0.94/ft1/8 x 1.5x1.5, $1.40/ftFLAT1/8 x 3, $1.72/ftTUBING, Square16 ga x 1", $1.27/ft1/8 x 2", $3.00/ftThat is all the data I have so far and is because I am pricing for future projects. You can almost double those numbers to buy at Home Depot, and various retailers around Kansas City. As far as the spending package goes, there is not a lot of "stimulus" if consumers and businesses aren't convinced it will work. Paraphrasing economist J. M. Keynes (1932), "people's expectations of the future is what will move the economy forward," or put in another way, greater uncertainty won't work. People must have a feeling that when they buy a tool or invest in a machine that the investment will be returned or have the ability to pay for it in the future. Steve JunkYard Tools .com
