Caster Question

I have noticed on some of the welding / cutting tables and the carts being built there is a varitey of casters being used. I can break that down to several reasons, cost, availability (stuff on hand) and particular use of the equipment being built. My question is on the rating of the caster. I initiatly thought if a work table was going to weigh 1000 lbs. I would need 1000 lb casters. Then I was looking on the Inet and the article mentioned that if one caster was rated at say 50 lbs, then 4 would be rated at 200 lbs. So in that thinking, if the cart (or any other item) would be made to hold up to 200 lbs, I would purchase 50 lbs casters and not 200 lb casters. Is this the correct way to calculate what I need to buy? Because if I build my welding table and it weighs X amount, I don't want to under buy or under rate the casters I need. Help !

Reply:Don't forget to factor in things that might go on your bench. Semi permanent items like the vise, tools, welder etc.  Also don't forget what you plan to put on the bench. If you put a 900 lb bucket on your 200lb bench the 50lb wheels won't last to long. I'd say for a light weight bench 100 lb each would be more than plenty. If you work with heavy stuff, then up the load rating on each wheel.
Reply:Overkill has never been my problem ! or I might say overkill is sometimes my problem. As seen on Pics from "my shop" post I do have ample but limited space (if that dont make sense) so I am haveing to make most of benches, carts, etc., moveable. I currently have three pretty have metal work benches that I use but If place them permantely in one place it will take up my assembly and construction area. Have checked out several Inet locations for the casters for cost comparison and will check my local stores to see how they match up. (Duane) ref to the SA200, I found a local welder repair shop in Odessa, able to get the metal face plate (bit higher than Stumphs (sp) but was there to pick it up, doors were avail. in three different types that he carried and were cheaper. Anyway, trying to finish up my wiring, got into a rat nest trying to "cramp" all the new stuff in an old box and wasnt feeling safe about it, so I bought a new service panel, took all the old wiring out and have only two more circuits to wire up and I'll haver done.
Reply:Got to go for right now. LOL needs computer. But to note, On my work bench, it may weigh 200 lbs (just a nbr) but all the "junk" that collects on it when doing a project it may 5000 lbs!!! So yeah I'll probably get 1000 caster if says to get 200 caster !! (Overkill is the way to go and be safe!!)
