I was in the process of designing a new W/Cart for my MIG and Tig welders, so they can sit on the same cart, side by side. Mig is a Lincoln Pro-175 and Tig is a Inverter about the same size. I was going to make room for two bottles, mig gas and tig gas, now i read this: I copied this statement below, from a "expert" and i have heard otherwise , so who is right here????
Reply:Sorry, but your copier seems to have run out of ink.
Reply:Yea, right, HERE is the statement i copied:  Kent, using your 75/25 gas for TIG welding will work fine. Gases used are essentially the same for both MIG and TIG processes, with the exception that some TIG welders prefer using helium for a hotter arc and a faster welding rate. However, this is expensive and in my opinion a bit unnecessary for most applications. You will have no problem achieving quality results by using the gas you already have.                                   Regards, Bill C This Kent guy is not me, i found this on a different board.........
Reply:The statement is pure, unadulterated BulldoodooTIG requires a gas that is not active at arc temperature, which means one of the noble gasses. Argon and Helium are the only ones used due to cost and properties, and argon is a lot less expensive the helium. You CAN NOT use C-25 for TIG. You need pure argon. You CAN use argon for MIG in some cases, but not all, and pure argon costs more than most common MIG blends.
Reply:yep, not a wise idea. good choice to get a second opinion. the filler metals are identical to GMAW, but not the gas.only thing worse than an ugly woman is an ugly weld

Reply:Yeah, water and alcohol are "essentially the same" too; sounds as if he's had a bit too much of one. If he hadn't mentioned the mix, he might have been able to say he was thinking of aluminum, where both methods use pure Argon, but then he'd have to explain how he forgot they were talking about bumpers or sheet metal panels or maaybe welding two chili   cans together.
Reply:Well here it is folks.http://en.allexperts.com/q/Welding-3...elding-gas.htmThere weren't any repremands in the follow-ups either. Maybe those get "edited" like some others we know.Last edited by Sandy; 02-21-2009 at 11:59 PM.
Reply:Just try the C/25 to tig with once.  When your tungsten goes POOF from the Co2 in the mix, you too will know Pure argon is the only way to TIG.David Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

Reply:Sandy,Did you see these?  Although they do fall a bit short of a true repremand.Boris P. writes on 2006-12-27 02:17:09I am new to this site and hope I am not stepping out of bounds here but as a professional welder with over 20 years in the construction field we have always used pure argon for all tig processes. I am not 100% sure if a mix will give you the quality you desire.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------WeldEng writes on 2008-08-18 19:28:29I would suggest using a 100% Argon mixture with TIG welding. If you are welding thin material, stay away from the 100% Helium gas, even though it produces a hotter arc, it is much wider and you will burn through thin material quickly. Argon produces a very fine and focused arc. I do not recommend using a 75/25 mix.I used to write for a couple towing/recovery industry magazines and there was a monthly 'department' co-authored by an 'expert' that never really impressed me based on his contributions.  One month he covered the use of snatch blocks and the basics of force multiplication and directional change and the differences of same.  Well to say the least he blew it big time and was TOTALLY wrong so I contacted the editor to point out his errors and voice my concerns.  He replied back stating I wasn't alone and that the author was notified and was going to be given the opportunity to issue a 'correction' in the next edition.  Well it came the next month and low and behold he started out in the right direction but his 'correction' wound up being nothing more than an attempt to explain why his previous explanations and claims were correct and acceptable!!!I suspect the same would be the case here as well.DuaneMM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!

Reply:Thanks, all..... I guess i will get back to designing my TWO tank cart........
Reply:I don't mean to hijack the thread and I'm sure this was not what was referred to in the cited post but:Is a 75/25 Argon/Helium or a similar mix ever used in MIG welding? Perhaps for narrow joints in thick aluminum where good penetration is needed?  Moderators: If this is a worthy topic, feel free to move and edit/rephrase this post as appropriate.
