Maxstar 150 sth or Millarmatic 175

Let me start by saying that I am new to this forum. My welding skills are next to none, but have a relative who welds for a living and is willing to help me. I'm always over there to getting stuff done. Most of my welding will be from very light steel to 1/4 in. The welds will be less than 6 inches in length, so really dont need a huge duty cycle.What I would like to know , can the Maxstar 150 STH allow me to weld up to 1/4 in or am I better of with the Millarmatic 175 which requires less skill.As a newbee I not sure how to express this , but I am looking for a weld that is splatter free, has good penetration without burning thru even on the thinest metals. I want to be able to control the bead and not have it control me and I beleive a TIG can do that.Thanks

Reply:Yeah, it depends on the job.  Maxter will stick weld 1/4" with no problem.  Tig is always a good option for no clean up  but we don't know what you are welding, so we can't help a lot.Mig is only a little easier.  If you don't understand it, A nice looking non penetrating bead can be laid down that will hold very little.    To LEARN to weld, I would go with the stick/tig option.David Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

Reply:Thanks DesertRider33 . I dont like stick, but if tig has better penatration , I get will get the Maxstar
