Reply:Yeah, I wished I had a shop to store all the "scrap" building materials that I've seen tossed over the years. I try and collect the stuff I KNOW I will use nowadays. I just don't have the room for it some times. Kills me to toss good materials like shorts and then need them 3-6 weeks later and have to go spend the money again.I hope to save $150 on the next job using "saved" materials.
Reply:GLwelder I do xray installations also with a friend. Nabbed 200lbs of lead sheet off one job. It was going to be tossed. The next one had even more lead, but I didn't have room to load it before they "cleaned" the site, so out it went. Lots of heavy gauge "scrap" copper wire, either shorts on installs or from pulling out old machines. I just couldn't bring myself to scrap all of it. I have some 50' of #6 SJ? 4 conductor that's used for my 220 cord that I got from one job. I still have 10 or 12 6-10' lengths of #4 or bigger wire that I saved in case I need to wire a large machine or something.
Reply:its amazing what a contract worker will supply for beer.i got 60m of 16mm 4 core 3 phase wire from a cotractor and ran that to my shed.
Reply:i was given 1/2 a box of 7024 rods the other day because i told the bloke i had not used them and would like to try.
Reply:Those are nice rods. You can only do flat or horizontal fillet welds with them, but they will put down some metal. If the settings are right, the slag will just fall off and there will be next to no cleanup.
Reply:I work in an office in the middle of Sydney. Across the road is an old 3 storey building that is getting gutted and remodelled. I'm watching a small truck right now getting filled with great bits of steel and timber. It breaks my heart watching it getting tossed out, but I would have problems taking stuff home on the train.Scott
Reply:I'm lucky the guy across the street from me owns a scrap yard so when ever i need anything i walk over get dig through the pile till i find what i  like
Reply:Thanks DSW for the setup tips.Thats the type of building site i work on Scott except all new contruction in the city
Reply:Those 7024 rods are drag rods. If you need the settings, I can look them up if you let me know waht size they are. The suggested settings may be on your box.

Reply:had a guy come to a jobsite . opened 50# of 7018. welded for three  hours and said he was done. left the box cause " it was wet now". i wringed em out and used em for a year.
Reply:I have become a real 'Bin Scab' since taking up the welding bug.I scrounge around at farm auctions and go to the local shed manufacturer and scab through their bins finding all manner of steel to practice with and put aside for future projects.Building sites are another good source I have found out.
