Hey, I'm finally at the point in my restoration where I need to get myself a welder.  I found a seemingly good deal on a schumacher electric 93090 for $170 new.  As much as I would like an expensive welder, it just isn't in the budget  .  A search here didn't turn up much on this welder, is it any good, and where can I find new tips etc for this?  Any help would be appreciated.
Reply:they are good welders, but the model you mentioned is a fluxcore only depending what you are welding you might need a gas mig welder. On the new tips take it to tractor supply or any other hardware store, most tips are universal. If you are welding any metal gauge 24-18 you might need a gas mig welder with a 75%-25% argon/Co tank.

Reply:Originally Posted by MooeThanks for the info!  I'm going to be mostly welding sheetmetal for the cab of my 1953 chevy truck.  I won't be welding anything on the frame or anything that thick.  I don't have a garage that can fit the truck , so all the welding has to be done outside.  I've read that flux core is better for dealing with wind, is there any truth to that?  Thanks
Reply:Well, after more reading I don't think I'll go with that welder.  Availability of new parts etc. seems very limited.  I saw sears has a Lincoln Electric Handy MIG Welder Model# K2185-1 for $300, and it includes a regulator etc if I decide to use gas.  I couldn't find anything on this forum about it, does anyone have any ideas if it is any good? Thanks
Reply:youll get better heat control with a welder with  infinite variable control as opposed to fixed taps.
Reply:do you have any recommendations?  I don't think I can get anything with infinite variable control on my ~$300 budget.Last edited by Mooe; 04-09-2009 at 03:35 PM.
Reply:Most all Lincoln product are excellent for home and hobby needs also on a budget tractor supply has the hobart handlers at good price. The hard wire and gas is the way to go for the sheet metal, just avoid the real windy days and you can make a wind break out of just about anything, Hang a medium weight tarp up wind and you can get pretty good result outside even on a breezy day.
