hey everyone. i would like to start a portable welding company in about 2 years. i have been welding for 10 years including, pipe, and structual steel. i learned how to stick first through a pipefitting apprenticeship, but the union was not for me. then obviously if i can stick i could mig. well tig is a untraveled path for me. i have watched, and even tried a few times, but i am in no condition to pass myself off as crafted tig welder. anyway,i have worked in the field before, but now i work for a structural steel, mom and pops fab shop. underpaid with no benefits. the paid holidays are nice, but i also get no o/t. i am almost 30 and tired of getting underpaid, while placing money into someones elses bank account. i have a 4 year old girl, and a newborn boy on its way. well now that you know my whole life story...i live in florida, and need all the advice i can get. i can say i am a new member as of this post, and predict this is one of many visits to to this site. thanks, Joe
Reply:Joe, first off welcome to welding web. I have a welding and machine business here in SW Georgia. I am not sure how things are in FLA, but as of right now in my area the economy has everything slowed down. At one time I had 4 employees, and I am now down to myself and one part time helper. If you have a job then I would not go out on a limb and lose it. The best thing to do is to pick up side work, and build a customer base WHILE keeping your current job. When you have enough work then go out on your own. But be prepared it won't be as glamorous as a lot think. You will work twice the ours for the same pay alot of times considering paperwork and all things involved. There are definitely benefits, but it is far from what most people think. Good luck in your decisions.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
