new user.. been thinking bout making some custom parts for some buddies.. my dad was a certified welder but now he is on oxygen so he is going to pass on his MIG welder to me.. i learned a little bit from my dad but most was hands on.. i built a custom tailgate for my 4x8 trailer and it has stood the test of time (been bout 5 yrs since i did it).. I was thinking about custom handlebars.. i have seen a bunch of people talk about it however nobody gives any details on which to use and which is stronger.. i dunno if this is something i could tackle or should i just take it to a welder to do it for me.. here is a pic example.. just made this image real quick to explain.. cut red lines and then move bars forward then reweld. or.. cut green line removing gooseneck and then move to correct position and reweld.. which would be better? all i want to do is move the handlebars position forward some to get more leg room.. the gooseneck has a bolt that connects to the frame and it also has tabs for speedo and other things that would need to stay in the same position..any and all information greatly appreciated.. been reading a bunch of threads seems like a lot of information here and great people..
Reply:MIG or TIG makes no difference if properly done.I would personally prefer to TIG that only because it's easier in my opinion to weld small tubes with TIG. But MIG would work just as well.
Reply:Today I would tig it.  If all I had was a mig......  I would mig it.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Most goose necks are adjustable, not welded.
Reply:I'd make the red cuts. You'll have almost twice as much bead, more surface weld, stronger.9-11-2001......We Will Never ForgetRetired desk jockey. Hobby weldor with a little training. Craftsman O/A---Flat, Vert, Ovhd, Horz. Miller Syncrowave 250

Reply:I think a class is a great idea. Btw, what are the bars for?City of L.A. Structural; Manual & Semi-Automatic;"Surely there is a mine for silver, and a place where gold is refined. Iron is taken from the earth, and copper is smelted from ore."Job 28:1,2Lincoln, Miller, Victor & ISV BibleDanny
Reply:I second that notion, in fact, I would probably TIG anything first.  Originally Posted by David RToday I would tig it.  If all I had was a mig......  I would mig it.David
