i am currently building a welding table / workbench out of 1 1/2 in. sq. tubing 1/8 wall ,and the bench top is made of 3/16 in. plate i was wandering how far apart should i run beads along the outside of the bench to attach the plate and how long should they be? and also should i weld the underneath side too? thanks chris ..
Reply:That 3/16" top will be OK for a workbench but not much for clamping/tacking to as a welding table. I know because that's what I have for mine and I've got my eye out for something at least 3/8" thick and preferably 1/2" to replace it.As for your 3/16", to avoid alot of warpage I would say 1/2-3/4" long every 9-12". If everything looks good and you want to, you could come back and add more in between. Reply:If you are going to make table you will use for years at least 1/2" steel plate, ask Duane how many times he wishes his table were heavier, 1/2" will still cup a little but you can set up a grid of drilled holes for clamping and bending
