Ok guys so which brand of 7018s do you prefer Air Liquide or Pro Star by Parxair ?I like the fact that Air Liquides 7018s are made here in Canada.  The Pro Star are made in Hungary.
Reply:I've never used the Pro Star rods but I do prefer Air Liquide over any of the other brands I have used.
Reply:Are the Air Liquid  electrodes the Blue Shield rods?I've used them and have been very happy.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
Reply:yup blueshield rods are the ones im refering to.
Reply:okAir Liquide does sell quality consumables.I've also used ESAB Atom Arc 7018 and have been pleased with them also.I believe if you purchase any electrode from any of the bigger and more common names in the industry, you will receive good products.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
Reply:lincoln excalibur is what i buy. anyone ever tried an MG 7018? a guy at work said those run great. ive never heard of them.
Reply:I've run the MG 7018 in the past, but the LWS doesn't keep it on hand anymore. At the time I didn't have anything to compare it too, but the counter guy says a lot of the customers are pi$$ed off that corperate dropped the MG rods as stock.I was unimpressed with the Lincoln rod the school had, even new boxes. My instructor had some Hobart that he uses daily in his truck and that welded much nicer in my limited opinion as well as his professional opinion.
Reply:I used to buy only Airco 7018MR, then Lincoln bought out the Airco rod end of it.  After the time period expired that Lincoln could not change the Airco formula, Lincoln changed it to their version of the 7018, and it sucked.  LWS gave me a 10 lb tube of Excalibur to try.  It sucked to.Tried Esab Atom Arc 7018, much better than ANY Lincoln version of the 7018.  Hobart makes a nice 7018 also.Never tried the brands in the op.  Try Esab, you'll like them.
Reply:I have used Lincoln Hobart and MG, liked the MG for 2 reasons, it was cheaper than the others, and was smooth enough. But a few weeks ago, I went to my LWS, and they stopped carrying it, they replaced it with a brand called Blue Damon, a crappy made in China product!#1. If you don't like what I wrote, or if it offends you, then don't read it!#2. I am living life the way I see fit, if you don't like the way I'M living, tough sh**!
Reply:I should have posted that they did carry Esab, Lincoln, Hobart, Weldmark, MG and had a good selection of them, and they dropped all other brands except Lincoln and started carrying this Blue Demon brand as the only other alternative "They finally got their established Lincoln dealership status"Grrr!#1. If you don't like what I wrote, or if it offends you, then don't read it!#2. I am living life the way I see fit, if you don't like the way I'M living, tough sh**!
Reply:I have welded with the Hobart 7018s they run nice.   I picked up a box of 7018s from princess auto once (Canadian version of harbour freight).  It was their in house brand name, made in china rods.  I could get a nice bead with them but you had to run them way hotter than any of 7018 I have ran.   I wouldnt use them for anything critical though
Reply:we use that blue demon crap at work. at first i thought this isnt too bad for a cheap rod but they are very inconsistant. you must be talking about WSI huh ken dennis? i used to like atom arc but for some reason i keep finding myself buying excalibur. lincolns regular 7018 sucks. the ones in the cardboard box.
Reply:Yup!Ours here used to be just an old locally owned, run of the mill welding supply place, then WSI bought them out and once the old stock ran out, no more goodies!#1. Reply:bummer. fort wayne is like that too. there are two wsis in the fort. i ususlly go to praxair or hiatts in ft wayne. ever been to hiatts store? he sells new and used equip and has a nice little place. he swaps stuff too.
Reply:I have bought just about every brand made for our welders and the 3 brands they ask for the most are Lincoln Jet LH 78MR, Atom Arc 7018, and WA Alloy 7018.  Many of my guys refuse to use Hobart.Personally, I have found mishandling of the 7018's leads to more problems than the actual brand of rods they use.Jamie WebbWelder & InspectorBusiness and HobbyLincoln Pro-Mig 180 with Spool Gun and Lincoln AC225
Reply:Never heard of the other ones mentioned above. Lincoln, all I ever bought, to old to change now. Lincoln rod for a Lincoln welding machine.Lincoln Ranger 8                        Lincoln 175                          Drill pressLincoln 225 mig                            Plasma                              8 ft brake        52" jump shear
Reply:Lincoln Excalibur.  Runs the same from rod to rod, and can to can.Runs a little cool, but still has excellent penetration. It is ISO  rated on the production end.  I don't know about the others. When you compare the cost of welding rod to drilling and bolting an assembly, it makes sense to buy the best rod.  Compared to the rest of the stuff it takes to make whatever you're making, rod is the cheapest thing on the menu.Lincoln rod is like McDonalds hamburgers.  No matter where you buy a hamburger from McD, it tastes the same, and it's consistent.  SAme with Lincoln"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:And it depends on what you like running.  If you're used to a certain brand........stick with it.I always argue myself right back to ground zero"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:I use the Hobart 7018 cause that's what's available locally at a good price.  It runs good.  The other low price alternative is Radnor, which really really sucks very bad.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:Hobart 418 in tins only, the Airco stuff sucks, and I hate the Excaliber.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:Most of my adult life I work with whatever was supplied by a government contractor. That means you hear the phrase    'it meets the specs, learn to like it." Now that I get to chose between two supplier most of the time I find that the 10 lb black plastic boxes of Hobarts suck imho, and I'm only 3 minutes away from my supplier of excaliber. I guess it comes down to what Sam said Depends what your used to. As long as it a magor brand find what you like and stick with it.Tough as nails and damn near as smart
