I got a job offer to weld up some pipe and everybody I talk to in person about this says to use 6010 5p+ for my root. So i bought 10# and went practicing and as it would turn out I need it. I got 3/32 running them with a sqaure wave 175 at anywhere from 75 to 90 and I just cant get it. I know practice makes perfect but I'm alittle impatient.
Reply:give 65 amps a try. thats pretty hot to be burning that little electrode.

Reply:Get some bigger rods.I'd rather be hunting........USE ENOUGH HEAT.......Drifting around Aussie welding more pipe up, for something different.....wanting to get home.
Reply:if you are gonna weld up pipe with a squarewave 175 be prepared to take awhile.  The one I have is fine for odd jobs, but it won't take long for the duty cycle to run out on you and the machine will kick out until it cools.  What size pipe are you talking about?  Is it a structural job, pressure job, or just a project being built with pipe?I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:Are you going to tell us about the problem you are having or are we just supposed to guess?Have we all gone mad?
Reply:is the Squarewave 175 the machine??

Reply:Squarewave is by definition AC. It prolly does DC as well if he is running 6010 which only runs on DC+.I tried running them on DC-, and the professor says, "Hey, I walked past your booth and I heard that rod SCREAMIN!!!" Reply:gclamp I am running dc+ i geuss thats straight  i like ur signature
Reply:not trying to be an azz, but if this is a pressure job I would skip the stick and go with mig if you feel competent doing it that way as you have in the past.  There's a lot of liability in pressure work to do it with a process you aren't familiar with, but I would think that you are a tad hot.  I normally run 3/32 5p+ at around 65-70 amps.  Were you planning to run 6010 all the way out or just the root?  Uphand or down hand?  What are the pieces gonna be used for?I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:Hammack....just the root i was goin to cover with 7018 or mig L-56 tri mix. not sure what u mean up hand or down hand. these piecesare for a gas well fracking company they tell me it will see approx. 2000 psi.
Reply:Just a word of advice, but unless you have plenty of insurance and are certified in welding pipe in the process that you will be using.  I wouldn't touch gas line. If you are gonna root with a stick then i would finish it out with a stick.  I never have been a fan of running mig over the top of stick.  Either run mig all the way out or stick all the way out.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:I appreciate the advice. Really I do. I finished the 8" caps with all stick welds. Not confident enough to do the rest with stick so I chose the mig. And by the way you were not being a a$$.

Reply:On smaller pipe I will run 3/32" 5P+ any where fron 50-75 depending on how it is running, DCRP. Usually once you get it dialed in you can jam it in and root away. I am a fan of using 1/8" 6010 and 3/32" 7018 so I can keep one heat for both rods, especially usefull when the machine is a few hundred feet away.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:I was certified for pipe about 9 years ago but I was of course 9 years younger and no body wanted to higher me due to lack of field experience. My point being the process that I used then was with a tig root with 3/32 70s2 filler and then we covered with 7018. I would expect you gents would prefer that better than covering a stick root with mig? I am ready for any abuse that I may recieve.
Reply:If you feel confident putting a tig root in and covering with stick, then do that.  That is standard procedure for many pressure vessel welds.  Don't know if those thread-o-lets you have to weld on have a bevel on them( i assume they do), but be sure to turn your heat up if you TIG them.  Single bevel welds with TIG can be tough, I usually run hot with a smaller filler wire and feed a bunch of it in there.SA-250DLincoln Pro-MIG 140 w/spoolgunVictor Journeyman O/A outfitWP-26, WP-17, WP-9 TIG torches run off my SA-250Metabo grinders and all the other stuff...
Reply:All of you prolly think I am a dumbazz. But here is the truth I feel more confident askn all of you your opinions versus some fella at a weldn supply store or whatnot. I have read some ingenius stuff here since I found this site.    delwelds-I welded the threadolets with my mig all the way out. I tigged the root in the caps and I set my gap with 3/32 filler. If I wasn't confident i wouldn't do it. Not tyrn to be a smartbut either. I saw on someones post that the only difference between a professional and an amatuer is that the professional will do it right even if he/she doesn't want to. That has stuck with me ever since. I appreciate all the help!
