a friend of mine has the 165 miller and for what he uses it for he loves it.  I need to weld from 1/8 to thinner material aluminum. i own a cst 280 miller and stick weld 12 inch pipe a couple of hours a day ,i dont need the 185 for the stick end of the machine, but or the tig(my cst 280 is dc only ).is the thermal arc 185 that much better of a machine when it comes to welding aluminum,i know the duty cycle is better and i like the idea of being able to switch the torches ( the 165 you cant) but what other advantages are there? I know there is a price difference ,but i dont want to be saying in six months i should of went with a bigger machine .the miller dynasty 200dx is also from what i  read here is very good machine ,but more then the 185 witch can do anything the 200dx can do. also what is the best price anyone seen on the 09 thermal arc 185?
Reply:The TA 185 offers quite a bit more if you need to weld aluminum .Adjustable AC balance , Pulse , Sequencer , and an adjustable ACFrequency are the main ones . The adjustable frequency is worth the price of admissionall by itself IMO . From what I've read , the Diversion is a fine machine , but , theTA185 is really in a different league and worth every penny .Miller MM252 with Q300Hypertherm PM1000Everlast Powertig 200DXMiller Syncrowave 200
Reply:thank you tigster, i am a stick man , dont no much about tig but want to learn and i figured the the 185 was in a different league.
Reply:I have the TA 185 and use it to weld aluminum, mostly around 1/8".   It is a very good machine for that purpose and  you will not be disappointed at all.   The price is very good on these too.  The TA 185 is a Dynasty 200 DX class machine for about 1G less $$$'s than the Miller (and I am a Miller fan).MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:What Desert Rider said and more.If you CLEAN the aluminum and set your AC balance for 25% + wave form, you get a whole lot more out of the TA-185 than you think.  Using more - electrode makes for more heat in the plate which makes the machine do more work with the same amp output.I have a TA-185 and its a dream tig machine.  I saw one from haun welding for about $1999.00 maybe a little less, I don't remember.  I have had this machine for a couple of years and I use it a lot, sometimes even for small production jobs with a water cooler of course.  I rarely use the stick option, I have quite a few stick welders.  I have never seen the over temp light.David Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Would a precision Tig 225 be 90% as capable when it comes to aluminum? I guess it would be quite a bit better stick welder, as the reading I have done on the Thermal Arc 185 seems to indicate it is not great at stick. How have the  TA185's held up? Easy to service?
Reply:Service?  I blow it out every now and then.I never used a PT-225.David Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:I have never used the PT225 , but , it is a very similar design to the Miller Syncrowave 200 ( which I own ).They are terrific stick welders and great on DC Tig , but , they just do not have the adjustment capabilities of the new top line inverters on AC . Adjustable frequency , and a wider AC balance really do make a nice difference . That's not to say that great work cannot be done on the transformer based machines . It can . But , the top of the line inverters ( TA 185 , 200DX ) on aluminum are better IMO .Miller MM252 with Q300Hypertherm PM1000Everlast Powertig 200DXMiller Syncrowave 200
Reply:thanks again for getting back to me guys, but i have to share this with you ,and it is no way bashing miller ,i own a miller mig ,a  stick machine and love there customer service.but i called a very popular miller dealer today ,which my company has been using for many years.here in the city,.and i no they carried thermal arc machine, and told a sales rep im interested in the machine more for tig end, not the stick end. i asked him if it was similar to the 200 dynasty dx with less bell and whistles ,he told me if he was selling me the thermal arc for stick ok,but on the tig end id be very disappointed,it dont come close to a dynasty,NOW  from what i been reading on this welding forum and others , the thermal arc has got nothing but great reviews.and i take the people on this forurm advice any day over what he had to say about the machine.but  what is that about ,he is a dealer also for thermal arc machine.I was honest with the guy about only welding pipe with stick and a little mig welding but new nothing about tig.
Reply:Well , I'd say the Miller Sales guy wants to sell you a 200DX ( for more money ) . Look at some of the work that guys like David R have been doing with the TA 185 .  Looks pretty damn good to me . Especially when the positive comments come form guys that make their living day in and day out by welding .Miller MM252 with Q300Hypertherm PM1000Everlast Powertig 200DXMiller Syncrowave 200
Reply:Gentlemen,You're talking apples, oranges, and grapefruit. The Diversion 165, the TA 185, and the Dynasty 200 DX are in different leagues and priced accordingly. The Diversion 165 is a very basic tig welder which has very limited adjustability.  This appeals to a newcomer (less confusing) but, in my mind, also greatly limits operator growth as he becomes more proficient at tig.  He has no control over pre/post flow, HZ, balance.  He has no stick capablility. And he's limited to 165A output.  Machine does not use dinse connectors so you're limited to what torch you can use.  Same with remotes.  Many other things I don't need to go into.Moving to the TA 185 (which I strongly prefer over the Diversion and have said so before) you now get the adjustability to move beyond the basics and "hone" your tig skills.  You have balance control, you have HZ control, you have pulse and sequencing, you have standard connections for torch and work lead, you can stick weld,  remotes are readily available.  Lots of good stuff that the Diversion doesn't have.  However, you also have a machine which is 220v only, which is limited to 185A, which doesn't have several of the features that the Dynasty 200 DX has.The Dynasty 200 DX has everything that the TA 185 has and a lot more.  More amps. Better duty cycle.  Ability to run (at reduced output) on 120V.  Broader range of HZ.  Additional waveforms in addition to the Advanced Squarewave.  Much larger customer base (therefore more after market options at better prices) and finally, you've got Miller standing behind the machine.Don't get me wrong.  I think the TA 185 is a fine machine and I've said so many times.  I much prefer it over a Diversion.  With that said, it's not in the same league as a Dynasty 200 DX and to get it there, I suspect, it would cost nearly as much.  If you look at the TA 200, it's only about $600 less than a Dynasty and not much more machine than the 185.I can understand the dealer (TA and Miller) who recommends the Dynasty over the TA.  The Dynasty is the most tig welder yet in an under 200A package.  Does everyone need those additional features?  Only you and your wallet can answer that question.Just as the Diversion and the TA 185 are in a different league.  The Dynasty 200 DX and the TA 185 are in a different league.Syncro 250 DX Dynasty 200 DXMM 251 w/30A SG XMT 304 w/714 Feeder & Optima PulserHH187Dialarc 250 AC/DCHypertherm PM 1250Smith, Harris, Victor O/ASmith and Thermco Gas MixersAccess to a full fab shop with CNC Plasma, Water Jet, etc.
Reply:I haven't welded with the Dynasty 200 but I have welded with the 300 and 350 and to tell you the truth, I didn't see anything that would make me want the Dynasty over my Thermal Arc, other than the increased amps of the bigger machines.   If I had bought the TA 300 instead of the 185, I don't think I would be thinking of a 300-class Dynasty at all.  My equipment list is mostly Blue, but I am very happy with a Purple tig welder.  MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:Sundown said it best but the only question I have concerning the TA185 is the longivity after the warranty?I am fixin on buying a TA185 Friday for $1600.00,08 model with warranty. The fellow I am buying with informed me that I would be better off selling it right before the warranty goes out. He said that it is a sweet machine but it is a popcorn machine. When something burns out,it takes alot of other components with it which are exspensive.I'm thinking that if you keep things from over heating and cool as possible,it should make things last longer. Can anyone shed some light on this matter. I'm sure it's a fine machine but to know how exspensive it is to fix? And how long will it last?
Reply:I used a Miller Syncrowave 351,water cool torch with all the features. I became very profficient welding thin aluminum, stainless tubing,of course purging the stainless with argon. I dont have no tig experience on any other machines. How does the TA185 compare to the Sync351? Is the TA 185 easy to use?
Reply:With any inverter if something goes out it can take out other stuff with it.  That's not unique to the TA185.  Inverters are all circuit boards inside, not like the old machines with big heavy transformers.   If you want the most possible reliability, get a big old behemoth tig welder from the 80's and earlier.  Those old Dialarcs, Idealarcs, 330's, Aircos, Syncros, etc will last for longer than most of us will be alive.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:I have had the TA-185 for a few years.  I USE it to make money.  Sometimes for days on end doing piece work. It works and have never caused a problem.  I have never seen the over temp light.  Warrenty is expired, machine works fine and I expect no problems.  It is set up for tig with a water cooler and that is all I use it for.  This is only one machine.David Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
