Reply:For an "AWS Recognized" certification that "MAY" carry weight with multiple possible employers and minimize the need to retest, I suggest contacting an AWS Accreditied Test Facility.Manufacturers/Companies usually have the reposibility for testing and qualification of their welders however some codes allow certifications for previous organizations to be accepted.There is no special requirement for who conducts your test and documents the test however with a known organization or individual , the testing may carry more weight with companies.There is no seperate "certification" for students. However there are hundreds of possible tests that could be given depending upon what you are going to do in production. Normally a test is given that covers as many production ranges as possible however it can also be as simple as welding a tee joint flat or horizontal (though easy, the penetration can get you ).For a test to be given the organization needs a Welding Procedure, Equipment to weld with, known materials, and someone to perform destructive or non-destructive testing .
