Ok im pretty much brand new to the welding world and im ready to buy a welder but im not sure of what kind to getim planning on doing some fabrication  to sas my truck here in the near future and need to be able to weld hangers to the frame and brackets to axles and suchI need to be able to make a very strong weld that under stress its not going to crack or snapand steel is mainly what i will be welding and some of it is pretty thick but mostly about 1/4"witch welder is right for me?
Reply:Knowing your application is the first step. The two process that you would be interested in are Shielded Metal Arc Welding [Stick] and Metal Inert Gas [MIG].  Check out Steve Bleil’s videos, Stick, Mig, Flux Core to get an understanding of which process best suits you.
Reply:awesome thank you

Reply:My buddy and I just SAS his 94 chevy and I did all the welding on it with a PM 350MP and we disigned all of our brackets and hangers ourselves. It took us about a month to come up and draw all of our pieces that we needed to build. Doing an sas takes a lot of patience and good quality welds to pull it off. We finally compleded the truck about a month ago and through the whole deal the truck ended up getting about 15" of lift and it looks sweet. But the best/worst part of this happened 2 days ago when we were driving the truck around and a deer ran across the road and my buddy sweerved and ended up going off the road and he caught the front passenger tire on a tree, ripping the steering knuckle right off the axle and denting the door and whatnot. THAT was the bad part, the good part is that all the parts i made and welded to the truck were intact and had no issues. I would say that is a fairly good test of if a weld will hold.Miller Dynasty 300dxSpeedglas 9002XMiller Spectrum 375 XtremeLincoln PowerMig 255xtLincoln PowerMig 140cMilwuakee Portaband
Reply:i guess i should have put all this in my first post but i am planning on taking at least a couple classes to make sure i know what im doing like you saidi am doing it on my dd so i really want to be sure of what im doing but im not going to be doing any real welding on that for about a year because i have to gather all the parts so that gives me time to practise and figure out exactly what im doingi was pretty much just asking what type of welder would suit my needs as far as wanting to weld steel and parts to my truck so i could go from there, pick a class to take and do research a little more about that certain machinesorry for being unclear
Reply:So what the heck is a dd?Is that one of those text abbreviations or something?#1. If you don't like what I wrote, or if it offends you, then don't read it!#2. I am living life the way I see fit, if you don't like the way I'M living, tough sh**!

Reply:I ain't much on manners today either!Welcome to the site. There is a lot of very knowledgeable professional welders on here, some can be a bit cantankerous in their posts, but most are well meaning, if they give you some advice, my suggestion would be to take it, weather it coincides with your plans or not, what they have to offer will save you from making those hazardous to life and limb, or just costly mistakes! As to your welder, I would suggest a good stick machine, or use a good wire welder with flux core self shielding wire!Unlike Mig, you won't be limited to indoors or calm days or trying to guard against a breeze , the initial cost is cheaper to get set up, and either welder in a 220volt machine will give you good strong welds, as long as you are willing to put the time in to learn and practice as much as it takes to get good consistent welds! Then theres the question of welding on a frame!Unless you really understand metallurgy, and are very proficient with a welder, I wouldn't attempt it!#1. Reply:well I personally would recommend a mid power MIG like a miller 212 or 252. Will do most of the things you need to do as far as hangers and what not go's. Stick will also but not quite as versatile. Since I have had my MIG I never stick weld anymore. But then again a gas welding set up is hard to beat. Cheap, portable, and very versatile. Have welded lot of broken farm equipment with a torch and a clothes hanger.
